Tigers Down Lady Bucs

LIVINGSTON, Ala.-Host West Alabama swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Thursday evening.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Tigers (11-13, 6-5 GSC) scored in all four innings they batted as they rolled toa n 8-0 win behind a one-hit shutout from Andrea Edmonds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UWA plated three runs in the bottom of the first on a double, three singles and an error.
• The Tigers added three more runs in the second on a walk, a single and a three-run Kierra Hague homer.
• UWA added a run in the third on a walk and two singles.
• The Tigers set the final margin with another run in the fourth on a single, an error and a sacrifice fly.

KEY STATS:
• Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
• Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) went 0-for-1 but drew a walk.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Tigers scored twice in the first and fourth innings as they built a 5-1 lead and withstood a CBU (4-20, 0-11) comeback for a 6-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs struck first with a one-out homer to left-center from Steagall in the top of the first inning.
• UWA scored two in the bottom of the inning on a walk and an Ashley Stassin homer.
• The Tigers added another run in the second on a one-out homer by Sarah Beth King.
• UWA extended its lead to 5-1 with two runs in the fourth on a hit batter, a double, a fielder's choice and a squeeze bunt.
• CBU shaved a run off the deficit in the fifth. Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Julia Schassburger (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central HS) single. An Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) bunt moved them to second and third, and Welch scored when Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) reached on an error.
• The Tigers scored a run in the fifth on a walk, a stolen base and a single.
• CBU scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Toni Rizzo (St. Rose, La./John Curtis Christian) led off with a double to left, and Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) followed with a single, advancing to second on the throw home. Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) followed with a two-out two-run single to bring CBU within 6-4. Ferreira singled to keep the inning alive, but a groundout ended the threat and the Lady Bucs were unable to capitalize on an Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) leadoff single in the seventh.

KEY STATS:
• Rizzo was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a double and a run.
• Steagall went 1-for-2 with a homer, a run and one RBI.
• Anderson was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
• Schassburger went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter.
• Parsels was 1-for-3 with a run.
• Ferreira went 1-for-2.
• Johnson was 1-for-3.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the third game of the series. They return home Saturday, March 18, when they host Mississippi College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader to open a five-game homestand.
