MEMPHIS-Visiting Delta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Sunday, winning the first game 3-1 and pulling away to an 8-2 win in the nightcap.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Delta State (15-19, 8-13 GSC) converted four hits and two walks into three runs as they claimed a 3-1 win in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Pitcher Mari Alex Sandridge helped her own cause in the top of the first when she hit a two-out homer to center to put Delta ahead 1-0.
• DSU extended its lead to 2-0 in the third on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a single and an error.
• The Lady Bucs (6-32, 0-21) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) doubled to right-center and scored when
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) reached on a two-base error.
• The Lady Statesmen set the final margin in the top of the fifth with a run on a triple and a two-out infield single.
KEY STATS:
• Ferreira was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Toni Rizzo (St. Rose, La./John Curtis Christian) was 1-for-3 with a double.

Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) took the loss as she allowed three runs, two earned, as she scattered four hits and two walks over seven innings against four strikeouts.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but Delta State scored four runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take an 8-2 lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU struck first in the bottom of the first inning.
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) walked and moved to third on an
Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) double. After Steagall was tagged out at the plate when
Julia Schassburger (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central HS) grounded into a fielder's choice, Johnson scored on an illegal pitch.
• The Lady Bucs doubled their advantage in the fourth inning. Schassburger led off with a single, and she beat the throw to second safely on Parsels' sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, she scored on a
Blake Andres (Arlington, Tenn./Briarcrest HS) sacrifice fly to right to give CBU a 2-0 edge.
• The Lady Statesmen exploded for four in the top of the fifth on an error, two bunt singles and three ground ball singles.
• DSU set the final margin with four runs in the seventh on a walk, four singles and a double.

The Lady Bucs return to action next weekend as they hit the road to visit West Georgia. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., with a single game set for noon Sunday. CBU returns home Friday afternoon, April 14, as they host Lee for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
