Bucs Sweep Hawks in Dramatic Fashion

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs swept visiting Shorter in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Friday at Nadicksbernd Field, winning in two very different styles. In game one, junior righthander Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn., Collierville HS) never allowed a visiting Shorter baserunner to reach third base safely as he pitched the Bucs to a 2-0 win. In the nightcap, the Bucs trailed 4-1 with two outs in the sixth inning, but senior first baseman Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) blasted a three-run homer to lead the Bucs to a 5-4 win to complete the sweep.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Sanderlin's gem lifted the Bucs (15-33, 9-23 GSC) to a victory as he shut Shorter out, only allowing five baserunners for the game on three singles, an error and a hit batter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs gave Sanderlin all the support he would need with a run in the fourth inning. Goodwin led off with a single. After stealing second, he scored on a Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) single, leaping over a swipe tag at the plate to score the run.
• CBU added an insurance tally in the seventh. Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) led off with a double to right-center, and he scored when King followed with a double off the right-field fence.

KEY STATS:
• Sanderlin struck out 11 batters in the three-hit shutout, tying for the fifth-most in the GSC this season. He allowed two baserunners in the first and one each in the third, fifth and seventh innings.
• King was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
• Goodwin went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run.
• Mattson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

NOTABLE:
• The shutout was CBU's first shutout since a 5-0 win over Northwest Missouri Feb. 6, 2016, when three pitchers combined for a four-hitter.
• The shutout was CBU's first against a GSC opponent since Jake Garbuzinski pitched the Bucs to a 1-0 win over West Alabama May 3, 2014 in the GSC Tournament.
• Sanderlin's outing was CBU's first 11-strikeout game for a pitcher since 2011, when Cary Crain fanned 11 against William Woods.
• Sanderlin is only CBU's second pitcher to whiff 11 in a GSC game, joining Charlie Soukup, who struck out 11 batters March 9, 2004 at West Florida.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Shorter (22-23, 11-20) scored three in the first to take an early lead, but the Bucs used a two-out rally in the sixth to come from behind for a 5-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After a pair of quick outs, the Hawks plated three runs in the top of the first on a two-out walk followed by four straight singles.
• CBU cut a run off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) laid down a bunt single and moved to second on a single by Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS). Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) sacrificed them to second and third, and Cramer scored when Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) grounded out.
• Shorter answered that run in the top of the fifth with a run on a walk, a stolen base and a double.
• The Hawks' 4-1 lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning. Angley-Holman led the inning off with a walk, and Smith was hit by a pitch with one out. Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) scored Angley-Holman with a hard-hit single deflected by the Shorter first baseman, moving Smith to third. After the Hawks brought in a lefty to face Goodwin, he blasted a 1-1 pitch for a towering three-run homer to center field to put the Bucs on top.
• The Hawks threatened in the top of the seventh, using a single, a stolen base and a sacrifice to put a runner on third with one out. Back to back walks, the second intentional, loaded the bases for senior Ryan Abone (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS), who struck out the first batter on three pitches and induced a popout to end the game and preserve his second save of the season.

KEY STATS:
• Goodwin went 2-for-3 with a homer, a hit by pitch, a run and three RBI.
• Dodd was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and one RBI.
• King went 2-for-4.
• Angley-Holman was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.
• Smith went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch, a run and one RBI.
• Cramer was 1-for-3 with a run.
Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) allowed one run in four and a third innings of relief, pitching aorund four hits and a walk.
Will Rutledge (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan HS) earned the win, pitching an inning and a third of scoreless relief as he pitched around two singles and two walks.
• Abone earned the save as he retired the only two batters he faced, one by strikeout.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs celebrate Senior Day Saturday as they take on Shorter for the final game of the season. Senior Day ceremonies honoring the Bucs' 12 seniors will commence at 11:30 a.m., with the game to follow at noon.
