Lady Bucs Split Saturday Matches

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches in the CBU Invitational Saturday, sweeping Arkansas-Monticello before dropping a five-setter to Tiffin.

CBU 3, Arkansas-Monticello 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15):
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (3-1) hit .327 as they rolled to a sweep of Arkansas-Monticello (2-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Cotton Blossoms used a four-point run to take a 5-3 lead in the opening set, but the Lady Bucs regained the lead for good with a 7-1 run capped by a Kapria Manning (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) kill that gave them a 13-8 edge. CBU stretched its lead to as many as 10 points at 23-13 before winning 25-17.
• In the second set, the Lady Bucs took the lead for good with a 6-0 run capped by a Manning ace that put them ahead 12-6. They never allowed UAM closer than five again in a 25-16 win.
• CBU jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third set and never trailed, leading by as many as 11 points at 20-9 before winning 25-15 to complete the sweep.

KEY STATS:
• Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) hit .515 with 18 kills to go with 10 digs and three assists.
• Manning had nine kills to go with 14 digs and two aces.
• Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) dished out 33 assists with 15 digs, two aces and two kills.
• Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) hit .471 with eight kills, five digs and two blocks.

Tiffin 3, CBU 2 (28-30, 25-15, 15-25, 25-13, 15-11):
WHAT HAPPENED:
Tiffin (3-1) hit .452, .458 and .240 in the three sets they won as they rallied for a five-set win over the Lady Bucs after CBU claimed wins in the first and third sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Neither team led by more than three points in the opening set. After several lead changes, the Lady Bucs took a 24-21 lead and served for set point, but three straight Dragon points kept the set alive, tying the set as deep as 28-28 before a Mollie Wadsworth (Hernando, Miss./Northpoint Christian HS) kill and a Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) ace gave CBU a 30-28 win.
• The Lady Bucs took an early 7-5 lead with a four-point run in the second set, but the Dragons, who hit .452 in the set, scored 20 of the final 28 points as they pulled away to a 25-15 win.
• CBU returned the favor in the third set. The Lady Bucs jumped to a quick 5-1 edge, but Tiffin used a five-point run to take a 6-5 advantage. The Lady Bucs answered with another five-point run to take a 10-6 lead, and they never let TU closer than three again as they pulled away to a 25-15 win of their own.
• Tiffin hit .458 in the fourth set, using a seven-point run as they built early leads of 7-1, 9-2 and 14-4 en route to a 25-13 win as they sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
• The Lady Bucs scored three straight to start the fifth set, but Tiffin answered with six of the next seven to take a 6-4 edge. After the Lady Bucs battled back to tie the set at 7-7 on a Lenoir ace, the Dragons used another 6-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. CBU scored three straight to pull within 13-11, but the Dragons scored the final two points on CBU attack errors to win 15-11 and clinch the match.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir hit .205 with 16 kills, 13 digs and two aces.
• Manning also hit .205 with 16 kills, four digs and two aces.
• Wadsworth added 13 kills with two digs.
• Clausen notched 23 digs with nine assists and two aces.
• Ke'alohilani Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha HS) garnered 11 digs.
• Henderson dished out 43 assists with 20 digs and three aces.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs hit the road for their next eight matches, beginning with four matches in the Missouri S&T Middle of Everywhere Classic Friday and Saturday. They face Missouri S&T and Ashland Friday before taking on Pittsburg State Saturday, with their final opponent to be determined. CBU's next home match is their GSC opener Tuesday, Sept. 19, when they host Union at 6 p.m.
