Lady Bucs Swept in Missouri

ROLLA, Mo.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs dropped a pair of matches in the Missouri S&T Middle of Everywhere Classic Friday, losing in three sets to host Missouri S&T and in four sets to unbeaten Ashland.

Missouri S&T 3, CBU 0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-16):
WHAT HAPPENED:
Missouri S&T (2-4) hit .354 for the match as they swept the match from CBU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Miners used a nine-point run to take control of the first set, turning a 5-4 CBU (3-3) lead into a 13-5 Miners lead. They built their lead to as many as 15 points at 24-9 before winning 25-11.
• Again in the second set, Missouri S&T started strong, building an 11-7 lead on a Kapria Manning (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) kill. S&T responded with a 9-1 run to take a 16-12 edge, and another five-point run later stretched the margin to 22-15 en route to a 25-18 win.
• After CBU scored the first two points in the third set, the Miners used a four-point run to take a lead they would never relinquish, eventually building leads of 9-5, 14-8 and 18-10 on their way to a 25-16 win to clinch the sweep.

Ashland 3, CBU 1 (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20):
WHAT HAPPENED:
Ashland (6-0) held off CBU in a close four-set match, with three of the four sets being decided by 25-23 scores.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Eagles took an early 7-4 lead in the opening set, but the Lady Bucs drew even at 11 on a Graziosi ace. After Ashland stretched their lead to six points at 19-13, CBU again answered strong, using a 7-1 run to tie the set at 20 on a Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) kill. The set was tied again at 23 before Ashland claimed the win with a kill and an ace to win 25-23.
• The second set was more of the same. After a back-and-forth start, Ashland took an 11-7 lead with a five-point run, but a four-point run with Lenoir serving knotted the set at 13. Ashland again took command with a 6-1 run to take a 22-17 edge, but the Lady Bucs used a four-point run to close within 22-21 on a Gennah Schoen (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) kill before Ashland eventually won 25-23.
• Yet again, the third set saw the Eagles take an early lead, this time at 9-5. Yet again CBU responded, using an 11-3 run to take a 16-12 edge. Manning and Miller logged two aces each during the run. Ashland battled back to tie the set at 18, 20, 21, 22 and 23, but a double-block by Schoen and Wadsworth gave CBU a chance to serve for set point, and a Lenoir kill clinched the set.
• In the fourth set it was the Lady Bucs who made the first run, building a 10-7 lead after three straight Lenoir kills. The Eagles used a 7-1 run to regain an 18-15 lead, eventually stretching it to 22-17 on their way to a 25-20 win.
