Lady Bucs Down Lee in Four Sets

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs improved to 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a four-set win over Lee Friday night at Canale Arena.

CBU 3, Lee 1 (25-20, 19-25, 28-26, 28-26):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (7-7, 2-0 GSC) scored the first eight points of the match as they took control quickly, with two Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) aces and two kills each from Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) and Gennah Schoen (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) during the run. CBU eventually built its lead to as many as 10 points at 12-2. Lee (6-3, 0-2) whittled away at the CBU lead, coming as close as 23-19 before a pair of Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) kills gave CBU a 25-20 win.
• CBU again took an early lead in the second set, going ahead 4-1 on back-to-back Lenoir aces, but Lee used an 11-2 run to take the lead for good at 14-8. The Lady Bucs used a five-point burst to close within 16-15, but Lee answered with four straight to go back up 20-15 as they held on for a 25-19 win.
• Yet again in the third set, the Lady Bucs jumped to a quick lead this time 7-2 on a Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) ace, and a Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) kill gave them an 11-4 edge. CBU maintained its lead late into the set, serving for set point ahead 24-22 and then 25-24 before the Lady Flames scored two straight to take a 26-25 edge. CBU answered with three in a row, however, winning 28-26 on an attack error after kills by Lenoir and Schoen.
• For the fourth set in a row, CBU jumped to a quick 8-4 lead on a Lenoir kill. The Lady Flames steadily took control, eventually building a 19-16 lead after back-to-back CBU attack errors. This time, it was Lee who served for set point ahead 24-22, but two Lenoir kills and an attack error allowed the Lady Bucs to serve for match point with a 25-24 edge, but back-to-back Silvia Sartori kills gave Lee a 26-25 lead. An attack error and two more Lenoir kills lifted CBU to a 28-26 win to clinch the match in four sets.
