MEMPHIS-Visiting Shorter handed the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs their first Gulf South Conference loss of the season Saturday at Canale Arena as they edged CBU in five sets.
Shorter 3, CBU 2 (18-25, 25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After the teams traded leads, the Lady Bucs (7-8, 2-1 GSC) seized control of the first set with a four-point run that left them ahead 11-8 on a
Gennah Schoen (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) kill. Shorter (8-4, 2-1) pulled within one point five more times, as late as 17-16, before the Lady Bucs outscored them 8-2 to claim a 25-18 win.
• In the second set it was the Lady Hawks who used a run to pull away in the middle of the set, using a six-point run to open a 14-6 lead. They would lead by as many as 10 points at 21-11 before the Lady bus answered with a five-point run to pull within 21-16 before Shorter won 25-18.
• A 7-1 run lifted Shorter to a commanding 13-8 lead in the third set, and they built a 17-11 edge before CBU used a 5-1 burst to close within 18-16 on a double-block by
Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) and
Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy). Shorter would score six of the last eight points, however, to win 25-19.
• CBU used a 10-3 burst to take a 20-15 fourth-set lead on a
Destini Berry (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) solo block. The Lady Hawks rallied within two points at 23-21 and then 24-22, but a service error gave CBU a 25-22 win and sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
• After the teams traded points early in the fifth set, Shorter scored four of five to take an 8-6 lead. CBU rallied for a tie at 9-9 on an
Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) ace, and they took an 11-10 edge on a
Kapria Manning (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) kill, but the Lady Hawks scored the final five points to win 15-11 and clinch the match.

Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) hit .200 with 21 kills and 11 digs.

Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) racked up 11 kills and three blocks.

Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) hit .421 with nine kills, three aces and three blocks.
• Manning added seven kills to her 13 digs.
•
Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) garnered 18 digs with two assists.
• Henderson dished out 43 assists with nine digs.
