Lady Bucs Tame Wolves in Four Sets

CARROLLTON, Ga.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs claimed their first Gulf South Conference road win of the season Saturday morning as they won in four sets at West Georgia.

CBU 3, West Georgia 1 (26-28, 25-23, 25-21, 25-14):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (8-10, 3-3 GSC) jumped to early leads of 6-2 and 9-4 in the first set, but UWG (1-12, 0-5) rallied to tie the set at 11. CBU rebuilt a 19-14 edge, but a 6-1 UWG burst knotted the set at 20.CBU served for set point three times, last at 26-25 after an Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) kill, but the Wolves scored the final three points to win 28-26.
• Big runs dominated the early part of the second set. First, UWG scored three straight, but the Lady Bucs answered with six in a row. UWG rebuilt an 11-6 lead with an eight-point burst. From there, the Lady Bucs steadily worked back into it, tying the set at 15 and then taking a 17-16 lead. The Wolves regained a 22-19 edge before CBU closed the set with six of the last seven points to win 25-23 on a Lenoir kill.
• After a back-and-forth start, the Lady Bucs seized control of the third set when they broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-2 burst to take a 21-17 edge, eventually winning 25-21.
• CBU used a six-point run early to take a 9-3 lead on a Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) block in the fourth set. Miller had four blocks and a kill during the run, which gave CBU a lead they would not relinquish. A five-point burst capped by back-to-back Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) aces gave the Lady Bucs a 16-7 lead, and they never let UWG come closer than six points again in a 25-14 win to clinch the victory.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir racked up a match-best 16 kills, hitting .243 with nine digs.
• Miller hit .538 with 15 kills, seven blocks and five digs.
• Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added 11 kills.
• Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) amassed a match-high 16 digs.
• Henderson dished out 48 assists with eight digs, three aces and three blocks.

The Lady Bucs come home Friday night at 7 p.m. as they host Valdosta State.
