Lady Bucs Split Second Day of Crossover

ORLANDO, Florida-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split their last two matches in the South Region Crossover Saturday, defeating Rollins in four sets Saturday morning but dropping a three-setter to Eckerd Saturday afternoon.

CBU 3, Rollins 1 (25-23, 28-26, 21-25, 25-21)
WHAT HAPPENED:
CBU hitters Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) and Miaya Smith (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) combined for 33 kills as they led the Lady Bucs to a four-set win over Rollins.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The first set saw big runs and blown leads for both teams. First, CBU (12-15 pending 3:45 match) used an early 8-2 burst to take an 8-4 lead on a Lenoir kill in the first set, but the Tars (4-18) regained a 10-9 edge on a 6-1 run. CBU answered with a 9-3 run to take a commanding 18-13 edge, but the Tars used a 7-1 burst to take a 22-20 lead before CBU closed the set with five of the last six, winning 25-23 with set point coming on a double-block by Mollie Wadsworth (Hernando, Miss./Northpoint Christian HS) and Abby Stutz (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian).
• The Lady Bucs built a 14-9 lead in the second set, and they used a later three-point burst to extend it to 21-14 before Rollins scored five straight to pull within 21-19. The Lady Bucs served for set point ahead 24-20, but Rollins again scored four straight to tie it at 24. The Lady Bucs served for set point twice more before an Alayna Jetton (Nesbit, Miss./St. Agnes Academy) kill capped a 28-26 win.
• The Tars exploded for an early 6-1 lead in the third set, and they never trailed, leading by as many as seven points at 19-12. CBU used a 7-2 run to pull within 21-19 on a Stutz kill, but the Tars won 25-21 to keep the match alive.
• After a back and forth start to the fourth set, Rollins used a 4-1 burst to take a 12-9 lead that they would extend to four points at 17-13. The Lady Bucs steadily rallied to tie the set at 20 on a Smith ace, and after Rollins scored a point, the Lady Bucs closed the set, and the match, with five straight points, featuring back-to-back Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) aces before a Lenoir kill clinched the victory at 25-21.

KEY STATS:
• Smith hit .625 for the Lady Bucs, racking up a match-high 21 points on 16 kills, six blocks, three digs and two aces.
• Lenoir pounded 17 kills with a match-high 14 digs.
• Henderson dished out 41 assists with four digs and two blocks.
• Wadsworth added nine kills and a career-best eight blocks, the highest total for a CBU player this season.
• Joze Smith (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) notched 13 digs.

Eckerd 3, CBU 0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-23)
WHAT HAPPENED:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After a nip-and-tuck start to the match, the Tritons (12-11) used a 9-2 burst in the middle to open a 20-15 lead, and they never allowed CBU closer than three points again in a 25-19 win.
• The second set saw 11 ties and four lead changes, with no lead of more than four points. Eckerd led 23-19 before a 4-1 burst brought the Lady Bucs even at 24 on a Stutz kill, but Eckerd would close the set out with a kill and an ace to win 27-25.
• The Tritons used a four-point run midway through the third set to take a 15-13 lead they would not relinquish, extending it to 20-15 with a nother four-point run. They never allowed CBU closer than three again, at 22-19 on a Miaya Smith (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) kill, and the Tritons clinched the match by scoring the last three to win 25-19.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir ledthe Lady Bucs with 16 kills and 17 points, hitting .300 with seven digs.
• Miaya Smith (Memphis, Tenn./St. George's Independent School) hit .455 with 12 kills.
• Jetton hit .429 with four kills.
• Joze Smith (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) amassed team-bests of nine digs and two aces.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs play their next two on the road before finishing the regular season with three straight at home. They visit Montevallo Friday night at 6 p.m. and Alabama Huntsville Saturday at 1 p.m. Their next home match is Tuesday, Oct. 30, when they host Union at 7 p.m.
