Tigers Down Bucs 95-68 in Exhibition Game

MEMPHIS-The University of Memphis converted 28 Christian Brothers University turnovers into 32 points as they claimed a 95-68 exhibition win over the Bucs Friday night at FedExForum.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The teams traded leads early, with the Bucs taking what would be their final advantage at 14-13 as Joe Laravie (Kettering, Ohio/Alter HS) scored on a fastbreak floater with 13:44 remaining in the half.
• Memphis answered with a 17-0 run, pulling away to a 30-14 lead on a three-point play by Tyler Harris, and the Bucs never came closer than 11 again.
• A quick five-point burst keyed by Laravie cut the deficit back to 40-29. Laravie drew a three-shot foul and sank all three free throws, then a steal set up an Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) layup with 2:38 remaining in the half to cut it to 40-29.
• Memphis used a 16-2 run to extend its lead to 69-41 on an Antwann Jones bucket with 11:27 remaining, and the lead fluctuated between 23 and 29 points for the remainder of the game.

KEY STATS:
• Laravie scored a game-high 26, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from three-point range, and he made 10-of-11 free throws. He also added a team-best four steals with two assists in 33 minutes.
• Dieball scored 11 with a game-high eight rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes.
Brad Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS) added nine with a team-high six assists.
Aiden Ruthsatz (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic HS) tacked on eight in 14 minutes off the bench, grabbing three rebounds.
• The Bucs struggled from the field, shooting 39.6 percent (21-of-53) for the game, including 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from three-point range. Memphis finished 52.8 percent (38-of-72) overall, including 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc.
• The Tigers out-rebounded CBU 36-29, including a 13-9 edge in offensive boards.
• Memphis forced 28 Bucs turnovers while committing 16, turning them into a 32-17 edge in points off turnovers.

COACH MIKE NIENABER'S THOUGHTS:
"Well, you know, it's a good experience for our guys. Tonight was rough, because we knew going in that the pressure and potential turnovers were our biggest potential problem. We had 10 in the first half, which is way too many, and then it got even worse in the second half."

"It really started to get away from us. You know, credit to them. Their energy and their athleticism took us to task. And they took us out of our stuff. It was really hard to run our offense against the pressure that they kept coming at us with. We've just got to get better at dealing with it, and of course we are not going to face that kind of pressure again this year."

"But we've still got to be able to deal with it. Teams try and play physical with us, we've got to be able to deal with that. Hopefully we learned a little bit. And we had little spurts."

"Some of the younger guys had some spurts: (Freshman guard Aiden Ruthsatz (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic HS)) was struggling, but he came in there and made a couple of shots at the end that will hopefully build some confidence going, Nick Deifel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) as well. It was a good experience to work out some of the rust, the kinks and get those guys their first college game. And we'll go from there."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs tip off the new season Friday night at 5 p.m. as they visit Central State. Their home opener is set for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., also against Central State.
