Dragons Upend No. 24/RV Bucs 83-79

MEMPHIS-Visiting Lane out-scored the No. 24/RV Christian Brothers University Bucs 6-1 over the final 1:11 as they claimed an 83-79 win Tuesday night in a nip-and-tuck game where neither team led by more than six points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Dragons (1-2) used an early 12-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 18-12 on a Daniel Hill layup with 13:30 remaining in the half.
• CBU (3-1) used a 15-6 run of their own to open a 27-24 edge on a Nick Deifel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) layup with 8:44 remaining in the half.
• The Bucs took their largest lead early in the second half, when an Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) layup capped a 12-2 burst that began late in the first half, giving the Bucs a 48-42 advantage with 18:21 remaining.
• After Lane scored six straight to tie, neither team led by more than four points again.
• A pair of Dieball free throws with 1:20 remaining gave CBU their final lead, at 78-77. The Dragons made all six free throws in the final 1:11, while the Bucs went 0-for-4 from the field, 1-for-2 at the free throw line and they were whistled for an offensive foul in the last minute.

HEAD COACH MIKE NIENABER'S THOUGHTS:
On how Lane played:
"They played very well, you've got to give them credit. They shot the lights out. They whipped up on us"

On the rough first half from the Bucs:
"In the first 10-12 minutes in the first half, we did a terrible job guarding. They were shooting a lot of open shots, and that got them going. It got their confidence up. The first 10 minutes of the game is where we did the most damage to ourselves."

On the tough calls:
"We got into a situation where calls could beat us. We got the ball into Joe Laravie (Kettering, Ohio/Alter HS). He made a tough shot, and it was a tough call. It could've went either way. It was a tough call. It's tough to lose on a call like that. I thought another tough call was when we had the trap on the out of bounds where they almost lost the ball and they called a foul. I told our guys, 'the problem is that we let the game get to a point where a tough call could beat us.'"

On how the Bucs looked:
"We looked like a team that just came off of a really good win, that just moved into the rankings, and just came out flat."

On Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS):
"Offensively he had a great game. His turnovers are a different story, and he knows it. He had three turnovers early and they were big, but they aren't all his fault."

On managing Nick Deifel's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) minutes:
"He is playing really well. It's hard to get him in the game, because we don't know who to take out. He needs to play a lot of minutes, but that means taking minutes away from other guys we feel strongly about. It's sort of a feel thing."

On upcoming schedule:
"There aren't any easy games. It's a very tough schedule. If we handle it right it will make us better for the long stretch. There aren't going to be any easy wins for sure."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs return from the Thanksgiving break Monday night at 7 p.m. as they host Harding.
