Lady Statesmen Edge Lady Bucs 59-57

MEMPHIS-Visiting Delta State out-scored the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 7-2 over the final 6:00 Wednesday night as they rallied for a 59-57 win at Canale Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Statesmen (11-13, 9-9 GSC) seized control early with a 14-2 run capped by a Maddy Sheraka triple that gave them a 16-7 lead with 2:19 remaining in the opening quarter, and they later pushed their lead to double digits twice early in the second quarter.
• CBU (9-15, 8-10) mounted a rally late in the third quarter, when Emily Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) capped a 13-3 run with a triple that gave them a 45-42 lead with 1:16 remaining in the third.
• The Lady Bucs would maintain their lead for most of the fourth quarter, taking their largest lead at 53-48 on a Rafaella Angelidou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristoteleio Kollegeio) three with 8:44 remaining. A pair of Makayla Enochs (Finley, Tenn./Dyer County HS) free throws with 6:05 remaining gave CBU a 55-52 lead.
• From there, the Lady Bucs went cold. DSU regained the lead on an Alondrea Rush triple with 4:05 remaining, and a Rush layup with 3:22 to play gave them a 58-55 edge.
Mikaela Blissett (Oran, Mo./Scott County Central HS) scored a layup with 2:49 remaining to trim the deficit to 58-57, and neither team scored again until DSU's Alexis Ross sank a free throw with seven seconds remaining. CBU called timeout to advance the ball, but they were unable to score in the final seconds.

KEY STATS:
Brynne Lytle (Jackson, Tenn./Trinity Christian Academy) led the Lady Bucs with 16 points, adding five rebounds in 34 minutes. She shot 6-of-9 overall, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
• Angelidou scored 15 with three rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 35 minutes. She finished 6-of-11, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored nine with five rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes.
• CBU shot 46.7 percent (21-of-45) overall, including a season-best 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from three-point range. DSU finished 40.7 percent (22-of-54) overall, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc.
• The Lady Bucs out-rebounded DSU 32-26, but the Lady Statesmen held a 7-5 edge in offensive rebounds and forced 15 CBU turnovers while committing six.

GSC STANDINGS:
With the loss, the Lady Bucs sit a game out of the eighth and final GSC Tournament berth with two games to play. Union is in first at 17-1, followed by North Alabama at 16-2, and Lee and Valdosta State are tied for third at 13-5. West Florida, West Georgia and West Alabama sit in a three-way tie for fifth at 10-8, with Delta State in eighth at 9-9. Since DSU swept the season series from CBU, the Lady Statesmen would win any tiebreaker against the Lady Bucs.

HEAD COACH SARAH CONDRA'S THOUGHTS:
"That was tough and it's disappointing. It's extremely disappointing for our players because they've worked so hard. Especially after the disappointing weekend they had, they stayed into everything mentally and I just did a poor job of drawing up those two plays at the end. We went a little early on the first play and I didn't clarify that very well, just some poor coaching by me there at the end."

On Makayla Enochs:
"She's practiced so well and when she gets in she can do some unique things. For her to work as hard as she does, I wish some shots would fall for her. She's been in the gym working and she usually practices and shoots well. For some reason though this year in the game just hasn't gone her way. I wish she could just experience some success offensively. Defensively though she does do some things and gives us that length that we wouldn't have otherwise."

Brynne Lytle's defensive matchup:
"She scored 23 points on Brynne, but the ones I didn't like were the ones where she got all the way in the paint and got layups. She needs to get help on those, but some of those jump shots we can live with. Brynne is going to play better playing against players like that. She's fearless and if there's anyone that's upset about that it's going to be Brynne. She's got that competitive nature and that kids a true winner. I was pleased with her defensive effort, because it's hard to contain a player like that."

On Rafaella Angelidou:
"She was able to take advantage of a little bit of a mismatch inside. For us it was more of a miss match on the outside and Rafaella was able to take advantage of that quite a bit, when we ran here on the outside to get some shot."

On the upcoming games:
"Our kids will fight, they always do. I'm proud of them. They've bounced back every single time and they'll bounce back and play hard these last few games."

FRESHMAN GUARD KELSEY ADKINS' THOUGHTS:
How do you stay ready to play coming off the bench?
"You really have to rely on your teammates that get you into the flow of the game. Game after game they're there to encourage and I just rely a lot on my teammates because they do a lot to pick me up and show that leadership, especially with Courtney and Mikaela. We really rely on each other and that's what we've done a lot this year."

On Makayla Enochs:
"That's what we mean when we talk about having to be ready to go. Makayla definitely was and the whole time we could just hear here talking from the bench. Then when she goes in she's really productive and does a lot, it might not show up on the stat sheet but she plays really good defense and gets other people help her to get a stop. She didn't get her layups tonight, but she came in strong and that's something we've seen all in practice. She's more aggressive and her outside shot is starting to fall with that."

On the Young Team:
"It is very exciting, because when you think about it we don't have any sophomores. We have four seniors with Rachel coming back next year. We have three juniors being Sara, Kenzie, and Makayla. Then we have the five freshmen. It's really going to be exciting because a lot of us have playing time and are getting those minutes in the game. A lot of times we're really productive, so I'm excited. With two games left we're not ready to get rid of the seniors at all. We've formed such a bond the last two years being around them they've showed so much leadership and they do a great job helping the younger players with everything. It's really encouraging and that's what you love about having them as your seniors."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs have two games remaining in the regular season. They visit Auburn Montgomery Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. before hosting No. 12/6 Union for Senior Night Thursday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m.
