Falcons Sweep Lady Bucs

MONTEVALLO, Alabama-Host Montevallo swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon, winning the opener 14-6 and the nightcap 5-3.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (3-10, 0-5 GSC) took leads in the third and fourth innings, but Montevallo (10-3, 3-2) scored the last 10 runs to win 14-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Falcons struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of two singles, a hit batter and a double.
• CBU took their first lead in the top of the third. Ashlyn Hinton (Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS) led off with a single, and back-to-back bunt singles by Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) and Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) loaded the bases with none out. An Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) single scored Hinton, and Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) doubled Oyhenart and Welch home to give CBU a 3-2 lead.
• Montevallo reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a double, two singles and three steals.
• The Lady Bucs regained the lead with a three-run rally with two out in the fourth. Oyhenart started it off with a two-out infield single, scoring on a Welch double to center. After an infield single by Johnson, Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) hit a two-run double to center to put CBU ahead 6-4.
• The Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game back up at six. Haley Barnette led off with a homer, and a single, a walk, three stolen bases and an RBI groundout brought another home.
• Montevallo regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with six runs on an error, five singles, a double and a triple.
• The Falcons set the final margin in the sixth with two more runs on three singles and a walk.

KEY STATS:
• Johnson was 3-for-4 with a stolen base, a run and one RBI.
• Welch went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and one RBI.
• Oyhenart was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.
• Parsels went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
• Ferreira was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Falcons took an early 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Montevallo struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second on a walk, a single, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.
• The Falcons added another run in the bottom of the third on a walk, a single and a two-out error.
• CBU broke through with a run in the fifth. Hinton led off with a double to left. After moving to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a two-out Oyhenart single.
• Montevallo extended its lead to four runs in the bottom of the sixth with a double and a pinch-hit two-run homer from Dylan Bailey.
• The Lady Bucs cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh. Hinton reached on an error to start the inning, and Rylee Nelson (Armorel, Ark./Armorel HS) worked a walk. With one out, Oyhenart hit a two-run single to left and moved to second on an error, but a pair of flyouts ended the game.

• Oyhenart went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three RBI.
• Ferreira was 1-for-2 with a walk.
• Hinton went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs.

The Lady Bucs wrap up the series against Montevallo with a noon game Saturday.
