Cotter's Big Day Carries Lady Bucs to Sweep

MEMPHIS-Junior pitcher Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn., Houston HS) threw a two-hit shutout in game one and hit the first two home runs of her career to lead the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a doubleheader sweep over LeMoyne-Owen Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 8-0 and claiming a 14-2 win in game two.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Cotter hit her first career home run and threw her fourth career shutout to lift the Lady Bucs (7-22) to an 8-0 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU opened the scoring with five in the bottom of the first. Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) reached on an error and stole second. Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) scored her with a double to right-center, and Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) scored Ferreira with a single. A Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch (Arrington, Tenn./Fred J. Page HS) single moved Anderson to second for Cotter, who blasted a three-run homer to right field for her first career home run.
• The Lady Bucs scored three more in the second. Oyhenart led off with a walk and stole second, but she was tagged out when Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) grounded into a fielder's choice. After Ferreira walked, Anderson reached on a two-base error to score Welch. Rosevear-Goetsch singled to score Ferreira, and after a Cotter walk, Ashlyn Hinton (Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS) set the final margin with a single to left.

KEY STATS:
• Cotter threw a two-hit shutout, striking out a career-high 11 with no walks. At the plate, she was 1-for-2 with a walk, a homer, a run and three RBI.
• Rosevear-Goetsch went 2-for-2 with a run and one RBI.
• Hinton went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs scored seven runs twice as they cruised to a 14-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs scored seven in the bottom of the first. Oyhenart led off with a single, and a Welch hit by pitch and a Ferreira walk loaded the bases with no outs. Anderson scored a run with an infield single, and Rosevear-Goetsch plated Welch with a sacrifice fly. Cotter singled off the fence in center to score Ferreira, and Hinton followed with an RBI double. After a Katelyn Cherry (Atwood, Tenn./West Carroll HS) walk loaded the bases, a two-out Oyhenart triple extended the lead to 7-0.
• LOC (3-14) scored a run in the top of the second on three singles.
• CBU scored seven more in the third. Cherry led off with a walk, and a two-out Welch double scored her. A Ferreira single brought Welch home, and Anderson followed with a single. Rosevear-Goetsch tripled to right to score both, and Cotter followed with her second homer of the day, a line drive to left-center for a two-run shot that gave CBU a 13-1 edge. After a Hinton single, Cherry reached on a three-base error that scored Hinton to extend the lead to 14-1.
• The Lady Magicians added a run in the fourth on a leadoff single and a two-out double.
