Big Start Carries Lady Bucs to Split

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with Williams Baptist Wednesday, winning the opener 12-7 before dropping a 6-3 decision in the second game.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (5-14) jumped to an early 10-2 lead en route to a 12-7 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Eagles (2-4) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first on two singles and a double.
• CBU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) led off with a single and stole second. After a Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) single, an Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) single brought her home. Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) drove Welch in with a single to left-center, and Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch (Arrington, Tenn./Fred J. Page HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) reached on an error to bring Johnson in and give CBU a 3-2 lead. Shelby Crocker (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) was hit by a pitch to score Parsels, and Ashlyn Hinton (Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS) completed the rally with a single to left-center to plate Rosevear-Goetsch.
• The Lady Bucs added five more in the second. Welch was hit by a pitch, and singles by Johnson and Parsels loaded the bases for Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS), who hit an RBI single. Rosevear-Goetsch and Anderson were hit by back-to-back pitches to score two more runs. A Hinton single to left scored Rosevear-Goetsch, and Welch was hit by a pitch to bring Anderson home.
• The lead remained 10-2 until two out in the top of the fifth, when WBC's Bailey Zini hit a three-run homer after a pair of singles.
• CBU nearly ended the game in the bottom of the fifth. Anderson and Crocker singled, and pinch-runners Marquisha Sanders (Millington, Tenn./Millington Central HS) and Kaitlin Cherry ended up on second and third with two out. Singles by Oyhenart and Welch scored them, and a Johnson bunt single loaded the bases, but a flyout in the gap kept the game alive.
