CLINTON, Mississippi-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take an 8-7 lead into the seventh inning, but host Mississippi College scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-7 win in the series opener Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• MC (22-11, 13-8 GSC) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first on a walk, a stolen base, a dropped third strike and a sacrifice fly.
• The Lady Choctaws added two runs in the bottom of the second on a double, a walk and a two-out, two-run single.
• MC scored two more in the third on a leadoff single and a two-run homer by Brianna Caldwell.
• The Lady Bucs (7-29, 1-21) took advantage of three errors in a four-run sixth inning.
Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) started the rally with a one-out single, moving to third when
Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) reached on an error.
Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) scored her with a sacrifice fly, reaching first herself on an error, and
Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) loaded the bases when she reached on a third consecutive error. With two out,
Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch (Arrington, Tenn./Fred J. Page HS) was hit by a pitch to score Welch, and
Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4.
• The Lady Choctaws scored two in the bottom of the inning on two singles, a wild pitch, a squeeze bunt and a double.
• CBU took the lead with a four-run seventh.
Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) led off with a single, and after a Johnson single, Welch blasted a three-run homer to center to tie the game at 7. Parsels and Anderson followed with singles, and
Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) sacrificed them to second and third. A two-out RBI single by Cotter gave CBU an 8-7 edge.
• MC scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a double, a single, a squeeze bunt and an error on a stolen base attempt.
