Bucs Roll for Second Road Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Following a triple overtime thriller on Thursday, the Christian Brothers University men's basketball team completed their weekend sweep, beating Montevallo 80 - 69 on Saturday afternoon in Trustmark Arena.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team was able to hold an early advantage, as the score was notched even at 11 through the first five minutes. Neither team led by more than two points through the first media timeout.
  • While the Falcons took a five point lead from there, the Bucs, powered by some timely passing and an 8-0 bounced back to take a 24-21 lead with 5:35 remaining in the first half. After the two teams traded jabs, CBU pieced together another 8-0 run to hold their largest lead of the half at 32-25.
  • Luke Rudy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) knocked through a three-pointer from a Nick Deifel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) pass on the Bucs final possession of the half and CBU took a 35-29 lead into the locker room at the half.
  • The Bucs offense remained hot in the second half, scoring 45 points on the Falcons defense. Powered by an 11-3 run that featured five consecutive Joe Laravie (Kettering, Ohio/Alter HS) free throws, CBU took a 53-40 lead with 12:55 remaining in the half.
  • The Falcons were able to briefly trim the lead to single-digits briefly with 2:32 remaining, but CBU closed out the game with eight free throws and the Bucs closed out with the 11 point victory.
KEY STATS:
  • Laravie followed up a career-high in scoring on Thursday with a 32 point outburst, including 7-for- from the free throw line. Laravie also hauled in four rebounds in his team-high 34 minutes of play.
  • Freshman Nick Deifel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) had one of his most well-rounded games as a Buccaneer, scoring 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes.
  • Rudy admirably filled his marksman role off the bench, shooting 5-of-10 from beyond the three-point line for 15 points. The sophomore also grabbed three rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes.

  • Christian Brothers University returns to the friendly confines of Canale Arena on Thursday when they host GSC foe Mississippi College. First-tip is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
