Lady Bucs Storm Back to Defeat Delta State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University women's basketball team erased a 13 point second half deficit in a 72-69 victory over visiting Delta State, at Canale Arena on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Lady Bucs (6-9, 3-7 GSC) struggled during the first five minutes, going just 1-for-6 from the field. CBU trailed by as many as 13 in the opening frame, before they ripped off a 7-0 run to trim the Lady Statesmen (10-7, 5-5 GSC) lead down to five.
  • CBU kept within shouting distance for the remainder of the second quarter, and trimmed the deficit to 30-29 after back-to-back threes from Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) and Mackenzie Lane (Franklin, Tenn./Page HS).
  • The Lady Statesmen responded before halftime, going on a 7-0 run capped off by a layup with six seconds remaining to take a 37-29 into halftime.
  • The teams traded runs to start the third quarter, including a 5-0 spurt by DSU to take a 42-29 lead with 9:02 left in the period. CBU responded, cutting the lead to 57-49 going into the final frame.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to the Lady Bucs. Kenzie Jones (Park Hills, Mo./Central HS) got the quarter started, finessing a driving layup around closing defenders. Jones scored seven of CBU's first 10 points of the quarter, capped off by another driving layup through contact and the free throw to tie the game at 59.
  • Jones' contributions were a large part of a 12-0 run that allowed the Lady Bucs to take their first lead of the game. After Delta State ended the run and tried to regain momentum, Sara Owen (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyer County HS) made a crucial three-pointer to push CBU's lead to 66-61 with 2:46 remaining.
  • CBU sank 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to prevent the Lady Statesmen from getting any closer to two points.
  • DSU had a couple of three point attempts with less than five seconds remaining, but was unable to get a shot to fall.
