Comeback Falls Short as Bucs Drop Opener at Central State

WILBERFORCE, OHIO - The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team cut a 23 point second half deficit down to just four, but Central State held on for a 70-61 victory, on Friday at Beacom Lewis Gym. The contest marked the first game for CBU head coach John T. Reilly

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Over the first 10 minutes, the teams combined for just 18 points as the Marauders led 10-8.
  • Central State finished the half on a 23-11 run to take a 33-19 lead into halftime.
  • CSU made five first half three pointers, while the Bucs were just 1-of-11.
  • Tylar Haynes led CBU with 10 first half points. 
  • CSU kept its momentum throughout most of the second half, increasing its lead to 58-35 with 11:45 left.
  • CBU stormed back, going on a 20-4 run, cutting the lead to 62-55 with 3:59 remaining. 
  • A Daryl Lewis three pointer got CBU to within four (64-60) with 1:55 left, but the Bucs were held to just one point the rest of the way.

KEY STATS | NOTEABLES:
  • The hosts were 15-of-17 from the free throw line, while CBU was just 7-for-13.
  • CBU was just 1-for-11 from three point range in the first half, but responded with a 7-for-12 clip in the second half.
  • Haynes led the Bucs with 12 points, while Jacob Lyons added 10. Nick Deifel had eight points, a game-high nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. 
  • CBU outrebounded the hosts 36-29.
  • Central State scored 18 points off 20 CBU miscues. 
  • The loss snapped a five-game win streak against Central State.

  • The Bucs are scheduled to open their home slate, on Sunday, Nov. 10, with a rematch against Central State. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
