UWF Hits Way to Sweep of Lady Bucs

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- West Florida combined for 32 runs and 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Christian Brothers University softball team, on Saturday at the UWF Softball complex. UWF took the opener 24-2 (5), and finished the day with an 8-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1: UWF 24 (11-1, 1-0 GSC), CBU 2 (3-7, 0-1 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- After scoring seven runs in the second, UWF added nine more in the fifth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Argos finished the game with a 19-5 advantage in hits.
- UWF finished the game with seven extra-base hits. 
- The Argos took advantage of 10 walks.
- Starting pitcher Julia Schassburger allowed five runs, on three hits, in 1.1 innings of work.
- Five different players recorded hits for CBU. Four of the hits came from spots 1-4 in the batting order.
- Maddi Welch and Kendall Westbrooks had RBIs for the Lady Bucs.

KEY PLAYS:
- After leading off the game with a single, Ashley Dyer advanced to second when Maddi Welch was hit by a pitch. UWF ended the threat with a double play.
- UWF scored its first runs of the game, in the bottom of the first, on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and an RBI single.
- The Argos took a comanding 10-0 lead in the second, plating eight runs, on seven hits.
- CBU scored its runs in the third inning on an infield single by Welch, and an RBI single by Westbrooks.
- After scoring five runs in the third, the Argos took advantage of four walks and five hits in their nine run fourth inning.

NOTEWORTHY:
- Dyer has lead off the first inning with a hit in four straight games.
- Welch has an RBI in four of the last games.
- Westbrooks has driven in a run in four straight contests.

GAME CHANGER:
- After allowing three hits, in the first two innings, UWF pitcher Kelsey Sweatt retired 17 straight batters to finish the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- CBU was outhit 12-3.
- Westbrooks, Sierra Anderson and Abby Ferriera had the hits for CBU.
- UWF took advantage of seven extra-base hits.
- Anderson surrendered six runs, four earned, on eight hits, in 3.1 innings.
- Sweatt struck out seven CBU batters.

KEY PLAYS:
- After Dyer was hit by a pitch to start the game, she scored the Lady Bucs lone run after back-to-back hits by Anderson and Westbrooks.
- UWF took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning.
- After Ferreira doubled with one out in the second, Sweatt retired the next 17 batters.
- UWF added two runs in the third and fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth.

NOTEWORTHY:
- Dyer has reached base safely, in the first inning, in five straight games.
- Westbrooks has an RBI in five straight games.
