Lady Bucs drop Saturday DH to Delta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Outhitting Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 27-7 on the day, the Delta State Lady Statesman swept the Saturday doubleheader over CBU, 5-1 in game one, and 13-5 in game two.

GAME ONE, 5-1 Delta State
  • GAME CHANGER:
    • DSU (18-9, 8-6 GSC) put two runs in the first frame and never looked back.

  • INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
    • Only three Lady Bucs (6-20, 1-12 GSC) recorded hits in game one. Abby Ferreira and Sierra Anderson recorded singles for the Lady Bucs. Additionally, Mackenzie Puckett logged the only extra base hit in the game, a double down the left field line.
    • Anderson (1-for-2) had the Lady Bucs only RBI in game one, pushing pinch runner Kaitlin Bowers across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the Delta State lead.
    • Anderson also pitched well in relief for the Lady Bucs, hurling four innings and only giving up one run. She also struck out four and only gave up one walk.

  • KEY PLAYS:
    • The Lady Statesmen paired consecutive doubles in the first inning to go up 2-0.
    • A home run in the third inning from Taylor Picou doubled the lead for DSU.
    • After Puckett's double, Sierra Anderson worked around a 2-2 count and drove a ball into the outfield to score the run.
    • Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the second, but the Lady Bucs were unable to push her home.

GAME TWO, 13-5 DSU
  • GAME CHANGER:
    • The Lady Statesmen scored in every inning, but a four run second put the game out of reach.

  • KEY PLAYS:
    • Like in game one, DSU blasted a double in the first inning to take a two run lead.
    • The Lady Bucs tied things up in the bottom of the first off Westbrook's center field shot.
    • The Lady Statesmen responded with a grand slam in the top of the second to take a 6-2 lead.
    • After four combined runs in the third and fourth, things looked to be getting out of control for CBU. However, the Bucs responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs and trimming the lead down to 10-5.
    • Kaitlyn Cherry sacrificed Westbrook home, and Ashley Hinton followed that up with an RBI single. The Lady Bucs tacked on an additional run off a wild pitch.
    • Delta State got the run rule victory though, after ripping off three more runs in the fifth to take the 13-5 lead.

  • NOTEWORTHY:
    • Westbrooks home run gives her four on the year, leading all Lady Bucs by a comfortable margin.

  • NEXT TIME OUT:
    • The Lady Bucs look to avoid the series sweep tomorrow at Bland Field when they play host to Delta State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
