Lady Bucs Knock off West Alabama, Split Doubleheader

MEMPHIS – The Christian Brothers University softball team scored three runs in the first two innings, and held off visiting West Alabama for a 6-2 win in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader, on Thursday at Bland Field. UWA took the opener 4-2 in eighth innings.  
 
GAME 1: West Alabama 4 (18-12), CBU 2 (6-26) (8)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- With the international tiebreaker in affect, the Tigers recorded a pair of two out hits to break the tie. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Tigers finished the game with an 8-5 edge in hits.
- Five different players recorded hits for CBU
- Sierra Anderson recorded the lone CBU RBI, on a fielder's choice. 
- Starting pitcher Macy Cumming allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with  eight strikeouts and a walk. UWA took advantage of four hit by pitch. 

KEY PLAYS:
- The Lady Bucs took a 2-0 lead, in the bottom of the first, on a double steal by 
  Ashley Dyer and Sierra Anderson's ground ball. 
- The Tigers scored their first run of the game, in the top of the second, on an bunt single.   
- UWA tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single.
- The Lady Bucs had a chance to win the game in the seventh, as Mackenzie Puckett led off the inning with a double, but she was left stranded on third. 
- The Tigers plated the winning run in the top of the eighth, on a two out single by Chrissy Tubbs and added an insurance run on an RBI double. 
 

NOTEWORTHY:
- Cumming's eight strikeouts are the most by a CBU pitcher this season. 

Game 2: CBU 6 (7-26) UWA 2 (18-13)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- With CBU up 3-1 in the fourth, UWA loaded the bases with just one out, but Anderson got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs finished the game with a 7-5 edge in hits. 
- Julia Schassburger and Puckett led CBU with two hits apiece. 
- Macy Cumming drove in a pair of runs
- CBU pitchers forced UWA to strand nine runners on base. 
- Puckett, who started the game, allowed one run on two hits 3.1 innings. Anderson surrendered just one run on three hits in 3.2 innings of relief.  

KEY PLAYS:
- CBU took a 1-0 lead, in the opening frame, on an RBI single by Puckett. On the same play, Maddi Welch was thrown out at the plate, attempting to score from second.  
- The Tigers responded in the second, plating a run on a triple by Lee Lee Parker, 
- CBU took a 3-1lead in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a Tiger error and a wild pitch.  
- In the fourth the Tigers loaded the bases with one out, but relief pitcher Sierra Anderson entered the game and got out of the jam. 
- The Lady Bucs extended the lead to 6-1, in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and a pinch-hit two-RBI single with the bases loaded by Macy Cumming
- UWA took advantage of a pair of CBU miscues, in the seventh, to score a run, but Anderson slammed the door to end the threat.

- The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 3 when they host Lane College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
