Lady Bucs Hit Way to Sweep of Lane

MEMPHIS – The Christian Brothers University softball team combined for 21 runs and 29 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Lane College, on Wednesday at Bland Field. The Lady Bucs erased a 5-0 deficit to take game one 10-8, and scored in all but one inning of an 11-7 victory in the nightcap. 
 
GAME 1: CBU 10 (8-27), LANE 8 (15-9) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
- Trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning, the Lady Bucs got a three-run home run from Kendall Westbrooks

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs finished the game with a 16-10 edge in hits.
- Five different players recorded multiple hits for CBU
- Mackenzie Puckett led the Lady Bucs, going 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and four  
  runs. 
- Sierra Anderson finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. 
- Westbrooks was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. 
- Macy Cumming pitched 4.1 innings of relief, while allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with
  five strikeouts. 
- Puckett struck out two batters in the last inning to earn the save. 

KEY PLAYS:
- The visitors put up a five spot in the second inning, scoring all of their runs with two outs. 
- The Lady Bucs responded, with a run in the second and three in the third. 
- With CBU trailing 5-4, in the fifth, Westbrooks' three-run home run gave CBU a 7-5 lead.The Lady
   Bucs added another run on a sac fly by Ashley Dyer.  
- The Lady Bucs got some breathing room, in the sixth, when Puckett smacked a two-run home run
   that increased the lead to 10-5. 
- Lane put a scare into CBU in the seventh, scoring three runs, but Puckett came in to finish the
  game. 
 

NOTEWORTHY:
- The victory was the first for the Lady Bucs, this season, when trailing after four innings.
- Puckett is one of three CBU players to have four hits in a game. The home run, and save, was the
  first of her career. Her four runs also tied a CBU season high. 
- The four RBIs, by Westbrooks, are tied for the most by a CBU player this season. 
- Anderson's three hits are a season high.
- The three doubles and two home runs tied for a team season high. 

Game 2: CBU 11 (9-27) LANE 7 (15-10)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- After Lane put up three runs in the top of the first, the Lady Bucs scored eight unanswered runs to
  take control of the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs finished the game with a 13-11 edge in hits. 
- Welch and Puckett had three hits apiece to lead CBU. 
- Marquisha Sanders finished 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. 
- Cumming and Kaitlin Bowers both had solo home runs. Bowers also finished 2-for-3, with three runs
  and three stolen bases. 
- Puckett picked up the win, allowing two earned runs, on seven hits, with five strikeouts in five
  innings.
- The Lady Bucs finished the game with six stolen bases.  
 
 
KEY PLAYS:
- After Lane took a 3-0 lead, in the opening frame, the Lady Bucs got to within 3-2 on RBI singles by
  Sanders and Puckett. 
- CBU scored four big runs in the second, using an RBI groundout by Sanders, an error that led to a
  pair of runs, and an RBI single by Ashlyn Hinton
- The Lady Bucs made the score 8-3, in the third, on a sac fly by Dyer and a run-scoring single by
  Welch.   
- After Lane scored in the fourth, and CBU in the fifth, the Dragons got to within 9-7 using a double
  steal and a two-run home run. 
- The Lady Bucs responded, as Cumming and Bowers hit solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth, to
  end finish the scoring. 

NOTEWORTHY:
- Sanders two RBIs are a career-high.
- Puckett is now 10 for her last 14 at the plate. She has recorded three doubles, a home run and six
  RBIs during that span. 
- The three-game win streak is the first of the year for the Lady Bucs, and the first since 2016. 

UP NEXT:
- The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 5, when they begin a three-game  
  Gulf South Conference series with Mississippi College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The series
  was originally set for Saturday/Sunday, but has been moved due to the threat of inclement weather.
