Bucs Conclude Season in Setback to DSU

MEMPHIS – The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team dropped a 61-58 decision to Delta State in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, at Canale Arena, on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game got off to a rocky start offensively for both teams. Just four baskets were scored in the first four minutes. Adam Dieball was responsible for CBU's only bucket through the first four minutes, as the Bucs trailed 6-2.
  • The Bucs faced their largest deficit of the game, with 6:50 remaining in the first half, when the Statesmen led 24-12. However, CBU strung together a 10-2 run powered by Luke Rudy and Aiden Ruthsatz three-pointers to narrow the gap. Going into half, CBU cut the Delta State lead to 30-25.
  • The Buccaneers battled back, taking a 33-32 lead after an 8-2 run to open up the second half. The run was capped by a Dieball three-pointer with 16:07 remaining in the game.
  • Both squads battled throughout the duration of the second-half, with neither team notching more than a two point lead until the Statesmen rattled home a three-pointer with 2:43 remaining in the game to take a 53-48 lead.
  • The Bucs would respond though, cutting the lead down on multiple occurrences. CBU had a shot to tie things even at 61, but its desperation pass with four seconds remaining was knocked away.
KEY STATS:
  • Three Bucs finished in double-figure scoring, led by Luke Rudy (14 points, five rebounds) and Joe Laravie (14 points, two rebounds). Both Rudy and Laravie played all 40 minutes for the Bucs.
  • Despite missing a large portion of the first half, due to injury, Dieball scored 11 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and three blocks.
  • The Bucs were outrebounded by Delta State 41-22, including giving up 15 offensive rebounds.
  • DSU finished the contest 24-of-52 (46.2 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-11 from long-range.
  • The Bucs were 19-of-46 (41.3 percent) from the field, and 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from beyond the three point line. CBU also managed to hit just 9-of-15 from the free throw stripe.
