Mississippi College Outscores Bucs in Doubleheader Sweep

MEMPHIS –  The Christian Brothers University baseball team found itself on the short end of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader, with Mississippi College, that saw a combined 40 runs and 56 hits, on Sunday afternoon, at Nadicksbernd Field. CBU fell 11-7 in the opener, and saw its comeback effort fall short in a 13-9 setback in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 11 (10-15, 7-13 GSC ) CBU 7 (3-23, 2-22 GSC) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
The Choctaws had 19 hits, including eight for extra-bases.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Mississippi College outhit the Bucs 19-13.
Travis Cole led the Bucs, going 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI's.
Reid Voss, Antonio Fernandez, and Will Turner also had multi-hit games.
MC starting pitcher Payton Russell allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
CBU starting pitcher Jonathan Baldelli allowed six runs, five earned, on 14 hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings. 

KEY PLAYS:
CBU got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by Reid Voss
The Choctaws answered back with three runs on three hits to lead 3-1. 
In the bottom of the second, Travis Cole tripled and scored via a Choctaw miscue to trail 3-2 after two.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth, the Bucs took advantage of MC miscue and tied the game at four after five innings.
MC put the game away when it scored seven runs in the last four innings to lead 11-4
CBU scored three in the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback.

NOTEABLES:
The 13 hits for CBU were the most hits against Mississippi College, since 2016.
 
GAME TWO: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 13 (11-15, 8-13 GSC ) CBU 9 (3-24, 2-23 GSC) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
With CBU leading 2-1 after four, Dylan Duplechain hit a grand slam to give the Chcotaws a lead that they did not relinquish.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Mississippi College outhit the Bucs 13-11. 
Ben Brocato led CBU hitters, as he finished 4-for-5 with a homerun and four RBI's.
Keagan Voss and Jaime Soto both had a multi-hit game.  
Antonio Fernandez went 1-for-5 with a homerun. 
MC starting pitcher Jackson Bridges allowed seven runs, on eight hits with nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
CBU starting pitcher Blake Dallas allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. 

KEY PLAYS:
Ben Brocato got the Bucs on the board early as he smoked a two-run homer to left field
Caleb Reese cut the deficit to 2-1 with a homerun in the second.
After a controversial call in the fifth, Dylan Duplechain launched a go-ahead grand slam to give MC a 5-2 lead. 
In the seventh, MC added to its lead scoring five runs on five hits to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
The Bucs rallied back to score six runs in the eighth, with four of the runs coming with two outs.
After MC added two insurance runs in the ninth, Jamarion White grounded into a game ending 6-4-3 double play.

NOTEABLES:
The home run for Fernandez was the first of his career
Brocato finished with a career high in hits and RBI's, while hitting his second home run of the year.

The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 12 when they finish their series with Mississippi College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
