No. 2 Valdosta State Outhits Lady Bucs to Earn Doubleheader Sweep

MEMPHIS - No. 2 Valdosta State powered its way to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over the Christian Brothers University softball team, on Saturday, at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School. 

The Lady Blazers took game one 15-0, and took control late to earn a 9-2 win in the nightcap. 

GAME ONE: VALDOSTA STATE 15 (30-3, 23-2) CBU 0 (7-27, 7-21 GSC) (5)

GAME CHANGER:
The Lady Blazers scored four runs in the first inning, and did not look back. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
VSU finished with an 11-3 edge in hits.
Ashley Dyer, Bree Brady and Memory Willingham each recorded a hit for CBU.
Samantha Richards completed the three hit shutout and earned her 20th win of the season.

KEY PLAYS:
Valdosta State got on the board first, as it capitalized on three straight walks, to lead 4-0 after one.
In the second, the Blazers added four more runs, including a two-run home-run by Morgan Hill to increase the lead to 8-0.
In the fourth, Lacey Crandall hit a two-run double to left center to extend the lead 10-0.
The Lady Blazers sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring five runs and extending their lead to 15-0.

NOTEABLES:
Ashley Dyer and Memory Willingham are riding a four-game hit streak.

GAME TWO: VALDOSTA STATE 9 (31-3, 24-2) CBU 2 (7-28, 7-22 GSC) (7)

GAME CHANGER:
VSU had seven extra-base hits, including three home-runs and four doubles.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
The Lady Blazers finished with an 15-7 edge in hits.
VSU recorded 10 of its hits after the fourth inning. 
Five different players recorded hits for CBU. 
Ashley Dyer and Bree Brady each recorded an RBI.

KEY PLAYS:
After a first inning RBI single, by Bree Brady, helped CBU open the scoring, Valdosta State responded with an RBI double to tie the game at one.
VSU scored two runs in the fifth, to take a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Bucs capitalized on a Lady Blazers miscue to cut the deficit to 3-2. 
In the sixth, the VSU added an insurance run to increase its lead to 4-2.
In the seventh the first five batters reached base, and scored, to help the visitors tack on five runs. 
After earning the win in game one, Samantha Richards pitched three shut-out innings, and struck out six, to earn her third save of the season.  

UP NEXT:
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, April 25 when they finish up the series with Valdosta State. Following the game, CBU is will honor seniors Rylee Nelson and Ashlyn Hinton.
