MEMPHIS -The Christian Brothers University Athletics Department has announced a record-setting 127 student-athletes as Buccaneer Scholars. The mark is up from the previous record of 104 in 2020. 

Highlighting the awards are women's track and field team member Raeven Veal, who will graduate with the highest cumulative GPA of any CBU women's athlete, and men's soccer member Felipe Rodrigues, who will graduate with the highest cumulative GPA of any CBU men's athlete.

Veal is a business administration major with a 4.0 GPA, while Rodrigues is also a business administration major with a 3.81 GPA. Veal is the third individual to have claimed senior athlete with a 4.0 GPA since the awards were created in 2016 (Gabrielle Pilgrim, Women's Soccer, 2016, Taylor Angley-Holman, Baseball, 2018)

Grade point averages of those honored are cumulative through the fall semester. 

In all, a record 45 student-athletes earned Gold awards for carrying a GPA between 3.70 and 4.00. There were 28 student-athletes to earn Silver awards for GPA's between 3.50 and 3.69, while a record 54 earned Bronze awards for GPA's between 3.20 and 3.49. The levels correspond with CBU's GPA requirements for summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude, respectively.

The Buccaneer Scholars award program was created to celebrate the academic accomplishments of Christian Brothers University's student athletes. These athletes exemplify the balance required of NCAA Division II athletes to compete in the Gulf South Conference--one of the strongest conferences in the country—and succeed in the rigorous CBU academic environment.
