Lady Bucs Comeback Falls Short on Day One of Ray Thrasher Memorial

NASHVILLE - After falling behind 2-0, the Christian Brothers University volleyball team claimed back-to-back sets in the opening match, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 3-2 loss to hosts Trevecca Nazarene. The Lady Bucs wrapped up the day dropping a pair of close sets to Arkansas Monticello before falling 3-0 loss, on Friday at Trojan Fieldhouse. The matches were a part of the Ray Thrasher Memorial Tournament.  

Trevecca Nazarene 3, CBU 2 (25-14, 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, 15-8)

WHAT HAPPENED: The Lady Bucs fell behind 2-0, but bounced back to take the next two sets before falling 15-8 in the fifth. Trevecca Nazarene finished with a .336 percent hitting percentage, while CBU hit .175 percent. The Trojans also had 63 kills in the contest. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set, CBU and Trevecca kept it close, as CBU trailed 9-6 after the first 15 points.
  • Trevecca then used a 4-0 run late to take the set.
  • The second set started in similar fashion, as Trevecca led 8-7 after the first 15 points.
  • The Trojans closed out the second set with a 10-5 run to take a 2-0 lead.
  • With the match tied at 18, the Lady Bucs scored seven of the next 11 points to keep the match going. 
  • In the fourth, CBU opened with an 8-3 spurt and held on to force a fifth set. 
  • In the deciding set, Trevecca opened with a 10-4 run, and held on for the win. 

KEY STATS:

  • KaLea Davis led the Lady Bucs with 40 assists, nine digs, and one block.
  • Maddie McGaha finished with 14 kills. 
  • Kimmy Hammond collected 15 digs and two assists in the contest.
  • CBU finished the match with a 5-3 advantage in aces.
  • Trevecca hit .336, while CBU was held to .175. 
NOTEABLES:
  • The 14 kills for McGaha are the second highest total of her career (16 vs. UWA - 3.6.21)


Arkansas Monticello 3, CBU 0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-10)

WHAT HAPPENED: Arkansas Monticello finished with a 39-28 kill advantage to sweep the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set AUM used a pair of 6-3 runs to take the opening set 25-21.
  • In the second, UAM took a 24-21 lead, but CBU responded to tie the score at 24. The Blossoms scored the next two points to take the set. 
  • In the deciding set, AUM used a .462 hitting percentage to complete the sweep.
KEY STATS:
  • KaLea Davis led the Lady Bucs with 24 assists, six digs, and one ace.
  • Maddie McGaha finished with 11 kills.
  • Kimmy Hammond collected seven digs, one assist, and one ace in the contest.
  • UAM finished with a 5-4 advantage in blocks.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bucs will wrap up the Ray Thrasher Invitational, on Saturday, where they will face Erskine College and Fisk University. The matches are scheduled for 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
