Lady Bucs Drop Pair of Contests to Open Season

MEMPHIS- The Christian Brothers University volleyball team dropped a pair of contests to open their season, on day one of the Buccaneer Invitational. The Lady Bucs opened the day with a 3-0 setback to Southwest Baptist, and finished the night by falling 3-0 to Charleston. 

Southwest Baptist 3, CBU 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-11)

WHAT HAPPENED: Southwest Baptist finished the match with a 39 percent hitting percentage, while CBU hit just .111.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set, CBU took an early 3-1 lead but Southwest Baptist scored 12 of the next 14 points and cruised to a first set win.
  • CBU and Southwest Baptist remained close in the second set, but Southwest Baptist used a late 5-0 run to take control late.
  • The Lady Bucs fought back, to make the score 23-20 but Southwest Baptist held on to win the set.
  • Southwest Baptist jumped out to a 11-4 lead in the deciding set and finished the match with a 25-11 win.

KEY STATS:

  • Tia Rizvi led the Lady Bucs with nine kills, hitting 38 percent.
  • Kolbi Reed finished with eight kills, a block, and six digs.
  • KaLea Davis led the Bucs with 25 assists.
  • CBU finished the match with a 5-3 advantage in blocks.

Charleston 3, CBU 0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-19)

WHAT HAPPENED: Charleston finished with a 43 percent hitting percentage, while CBU hit just .153. The Golden Eagles also had 44 digs in the contest. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set, Charleston used a 4-0 run to take control and claimed the opening set 25-14.
  • The Golden Eagles raced out to an early 4-1 lead, and later used a 5-0 run to help take the second set.
  • In the deciding set neither team lead by more than three points, but Charleston scored 11 of the final 16 points to earn the win
KEY STATS:
  • Tia Rizvi led the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, a service ace, and a block.
  • Kimmy Hammond finished with seven digs and three assists.
  • KaLea Davis led the Bucs with 24 assists.
  • CBU finished the match with a 44-32 advantage in kills.

UP NEXT: The Lady Bucs will wrap up the Buccaneer Invitational, where they will face Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Arkansas. Their matches are scheduled for 11:30 AM and 7:00 PM.
