Lady Bucs Drop Pair to Close Out Thrasher Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Christian Brothers University volleyball team saw its comeback fall short in a 3-2 setback to King, before falling 3-0 to Carson Newman, to close out the Thrasher Classic, on Saturday at Trojan Fieldhouse. 

FINAL SCORE | GAME ONE :
KING 3 (1-2), CBU 2 (1-2) (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10)

WHAT HAPPENED:

Maddi Rowley had 26 kills and 13 digs, but CBU saw its comeback attempt fall just short. 


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • King led by as many as seven points, in the middle of the first set, but the Lady Bucs were able to cut the lead to 22-21. The Tornado scored three of the next five points to win the set. 
  • With the score tied at 20, CBU reeled off the next five points to even the match. 
  • The Lady Bucs were unable to take advantage of 19 kills, as King held on to take an evenly played set. 
  • CBU held the Tornado to just a .061 hitting percentage to force a fifth set. 
  • King took advantage of five CBU errors to win the deciding set. 
KEY STATS:
  • Maddi Rowley led the Lady Bucs with 26 kills. The freshman also added 13 digs for her second double-double. The 26 kills are tied for fifth-most in school history and are the most for a CBU player since Emma Lenoir had 30 against Florida Tech (10.19.18). 
  • CBU finished with 65 assists, which its most since recording 68 against Alabama Huntsville in 2015 (9.25.15). 
  • Tia Rizvi had 57 assists, marking the most for a CBU player since Jessica Reber had 60 against UAH in 2015 (9.25.15). 
  • Kimmy Hammond led the CBU defense with 21 digs.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The Eagles hit .333, holding the Lady Bucs to just .079


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Carson Newman closed out the set on a 9-2 run to take the opening set. 
  • The Eagles hit .448 to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • CBU did not go away quietly, as it lead 20-18 late in the set before Carson Newman came from behind to earn the win.

UP NEXT
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when when they travel to Jackson, Tenn., for the Union Volleyball Classic. CBU is set to open with Henderson State. First serve is set for 5 PM.
