Lady Bucs See Comeback Fall Short in Setback to Union

MEMPHIS – After battling back from being down 2-0, the Christian Brothers University volleyball team saw their comeback effort fall just short in a 3-2 setback to Union, on Tuesday night, at Canale Arena. 

FINAL SCORE:
Union 3 (5-22, 4-8 GSC), CBU 2 (2-22, 1-11 GSC), (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 10-25, 15-12)

WHAT HAPPENED:
After being down 2-0 the Lady Bucs fought back using triple-doubles from Tia Rizvi (10 kills, 23 assists and 10 digs) and Sarah Allyn Thornell (10 kills, 19 assists and 12 digs), but the Bulldogs took the fifth set to hold on for the win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • CBU jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead on kills from Alma Solis and Rizvi. The Lady Bucs pushed the lead to 12-7 on a Jordan Allen kill, but Union outscored CBU 18-11 to end the set. 
  • The Bulldogs used an early 12-2 run to take a 15-6 lead, and held on to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Lady Bucs fought back in the third set, using back-to-back service aces by Thornell to take an 8-5 lead. A kill from freshman Addie Waggoner, and a Union attack error gave CBU the 25-23 third set win. 
  • CBU kept the momentum, accumulating 13 kills with just one error, while hitting .522 in a dominant fourth set. 
  • In the deciding set CBU jumped out to a 6-2 lead, before Union battled back to tie the score at six. The Bulldogs used a 5-1 run to take a 13-10 lead and did not look back taking the set 15-12. 
KEY STATS | NOTABLES:
  • As a team, the Lady Bucs had season-highs in kills (54), assists (49), service aces (12) and blocks (10).  
  • This marked the first time since since Oct. 18, 2019 (3-2 win over Rollins) that CBU has recorded double-digit blocks.
  • It was the first time this season that two Lady Bucs recorded triple-doubles, and the first time five players had at least eight kills (Maddi Rowley 10, Tia Rizvi 10, Sarah Allyn Thornell 10, Alma Solis 8, Jordan Allen 8).
  • The seven blocks for Alma Solis are a season-high. She currently leads the team with in stuffs with 56.
  • For the 15th time this season, junior setter Sarah Allyn Thornell recorded at least 10 assists.
  • With 12 digs, Sofia Rathheim-Hilton recorded her 14th match in which she had double-digit digs. Hilton leads the team in digs with 237.
  • For the sixth time this season, Tia Rizvi had double-digit digs. 
  • Rowley has double-figure kills in four different matches. 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to embark on their final road-trip of the season, starting with a Thursday, Nov. 2 contest at West Alabama. First serve is set for 6 PM.
