Lady Bucs Power Past Kentucky Wesleyan

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. - The Christian Brothers University softball team opened the UAH Charger Chillout with a 25-2 (5) thumping of Kentucky Wesleyan, on Friday evening, at Sand Mountain Park.

The Lady Bucs scored 17 runs in the first two innings of the contest, including nine in the opening frame. The 2-1 start for CBU ties its best start to the season since 2017. 

FINALE SCORE: CBU 25 (2-1) KWC 2 (1-1) 

GAME CHANGER:
The Lady Bucs scored nine runs in the opening frame, sending 13 batters to the plate. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Bucs finished with a 17-4 advantage in hits. 
  • CBU had three extra-base hits, including two triples. 
  • The Lady Bucs had five stolen bases. 
  • Josie Bond led the Lady Bucs with three hits and four RBIs. 
  • Kate Candies, Kiera Coulon and Memory Willingham all drove in three runs apiece. 
  • Willingham and Coulon both had three-RBI triples.  
  • Mackenzie Bakel and Caroline Gross both had two hits each. 
  • Starting pitcher Macy Cumming did not allow a hit in three innings of work. 
KEY PLAYS:
CBU sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first. Willingham drove in three runs with a bases-clearing triple. 
The Lady Bucs scored eight more in the second, taking advantage of four KWC miscues. Riley Simpson had a two-RBI double in the inning. 
CBU added two runs in the third and six in the fourth. 
The Panthers scored a run in the fourth and one in the fifth. 

NOTABLES:
  • The 25 runs are the most scored by CBU since plating 37 against LeMoyne-Owen last year. 
  • The four RBIs for Bond tied a career-high. 
  • Candies leads the Lady Bucs with six RBIs.

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 for day two of the UAH Charger Chillout. CBU is scheduled to face Carson-Newman at 11:30 AM, before wrapping up the day with Ohio Dominican at 2 PM.
