Big First Inning Helps Lift Delta State Past Lady Bucs

MEMPHIS - Delta State used a five run first inning to help it earn a 7-3 victory over the Christian Brothers University softball team, on Saturday afternoon, at Bland Field. 

With the win, DSU claimed the series 2-1. 

FINAL: DSU 7 (7-16, 4-5 GSC) CBU 3 (4-15, 1-8 GSC)  

GAME CHANGER:
The Lady Statesmen sent 10 batters to the plate in the first, plating five runs on six hits. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Bucs were outhit 12-5.
  • Kiera Coulon and Cara Alexander led CBU with two hits apiece. Coulon had a pair of doubles, while Alexander had a double and drove in a pair of runs. 
  • Riley Simpson had a home run for CBU. 
  • Five different CBU players had a hit.
  • Relief pitcher Olivia Renta allowed two runs, with just one earned, with four strikeouts in six innings of work. 
KEY PLAYS:
DSU started quickly plating five runs in the first inning. Lindsey Coffey had a two-run home run off the foul pole in the inning. 
With DSU leading 7-0, in the fifth, Riley Simpson got CBU on the board with a solo home run. 
CBU added a pair in the seventh, on a two-RBI double by Cara Alexander, but saw its comeback fall short.

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 14 when they travel to Williams Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
