Christian Brothers plays Montevallo tough despite defeat

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers volleyball (5-12, 1-6 GSC) was defeated by Montevallo (8-10, 5-3 GSC) in three sets on Saturday afternoon at the Canale Arena. The Lady Buccaneers put up 20 or more points in all three sets.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Senior Tia Rizvi led all players with a season-high 14 points. She registered nine kills, three service aces and four block assists in a great all-around performance. She also had nine digs in the match.
  • Abby Wheaton and Aileen Zavala led the defensive effort with six total blocks and 14 digs, respectively.
  • Senior Sarah Allyn Thornell posted a match-high 27 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CBU briefly gained the lead in the first set with a streak of five unanswered points. Rizvi recorded three service aces during that streak to help her team to a one-point advantage, 11-10. A 6-1 run by Montevallo later on gave the Falcons a set point at 24-17. The next three points were seized by the Bucs before UM clinched the set with a kill, 25-20.
  • Christian Brothers went up by as much as four points, 10-6, at the beginning of the second set. The momentum then shifted to Montevallo, but CBU never let the Falcons put set two out of reach. The set ended up deadlocked at 20-apiece before UM closed it out, 25-21, with a 5-1 run.
  • The Falcons went up 12-5 in the early stages of the third set. The Bucs then battled back to make it close at the end. Montevallo went on to win the third set by another slim four-point margin, 25-21.
