Lady Buccaneers force a fourth set in defeat to Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University volleyball team (4-10, 0-4 GSC) was defeated by Union (3-10, 1-3 GSC) in four sets on Thursday night at the Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Lady Buccaneers dropped the first two sets (25-18, 25-18) before they rallied to win the third set, 27-25. The fourth set went to the Bulldogs, 25-17.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Freshman Ella Schumacher recorded 13 kills for the second-straight match to lead CBU's attack.
  • Junior Calah Jackson registered 11 points for the Bucs with eight kills and three service aces. She also made a team-high 15 digs to help out on the defensive end.
  • Senior Sarah Allyn Thornell assisted on 26 kills.
  • Junior Alma Solis swatted a season-high four total blocks (2 BS/2 BA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Union went up 9-3 at the beginning of the first set and never let up. Christian Brothers did well to close the gap to five points, 22-17, with a 7-1 run towards the end. Jordan Allen landed three-consecutive kills to get her team back within five points before the Bulldogs finished off set one.
  • The second set started off with the GSC foes trading points. The separation came when Union scored six unanswered points to go up by seven, 19-12. That gap proved to be insurmountable for the Bucs as the Bulldogs went on to win the second set by the same margin as the first.
  • The third set was an absolute thriller with the lead being traded back-and-forth throughout. Union was first to earn a set-point at 24-23. A critical block by Thornell and Solis then leveled the score. The Bulldogs reached set-point a second time at 25-24 after an attack error by CBU. Christian Brothers withstood the pressure and picked up the next three points to win the set, 27-25. A kill from Jackson forced the fourth set to be played.
  • Union rushed out to a 17-7 lead in the final set to make a comeback for the Bucs highly unlikely. Nevertheless, CBU strung together an 8-2 run towards the end to shrink the deficit considerably. Schumacher smashed three kills during the stretch that brought the Bucs back within five, 23-17. The Bulldogs then concluded the match with a pair of kills.
