CBU drops conference match at Alabama-Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Christian Brothers University volleyball (7-21, 3-15 GSC) battled valiantly against Alabama-Huntsville (23-5, 14-4) but ultimately fell short in a 3-1 loss on Saturday at Spragins Hall. The visiting Lady Bucs claimed the first set, but the Chargers' solid defense and effective offense turned the tide as they captured the final three sets to secure the match.

First Set Highlights (CBU 25, UAH 23)

The Lady Bucs started with intensity, demonstrating both resilience and strategic play. Jordan Allen was a standout performer in this set, with timely kills that kept CBU competitive. CBU showed solid service accuracy and passing, which helped them take advantage of UAH's early errors. Defensive digs from Aileen Zavala and Calah Jackson kept rallies alive, and the Lady Bucs built enough of a buffer to narrowly claim the set, 25-23. This opening set win showcased CBU's potential to execute under pressure.

Second Set Challenges (UAH 25, CBU 12)

UAH rebounded in the second set, overpowering CBU with precise attacks and fewer errors. The Chargers' offensive rhythm increased as they notched a .533 hitting percentage for the set, making it difficult for CBU to respond defensively. Despite efforts from Ella Schumacher and Allen, the Lady Bucs could not find a consistent scoring rhythm, and UAH comfortably took the set 25-12.

Third Set Struggles (UAH 25, CBU 11)

The third set saw the Chargers further tighten their grip on the match, displaying impeccable defense with six blocks. Despite solid passing from Sarah Allyn Thornell, who tallied 25 assists by the match's end, CBU's attack options were limited, allowing UAH to maintain momentum and win the set decisively, 25-11.

Fourth Set Fight (UAH 25, CBU 14)

In the final set, CBU showed flashes of the determination seen in the first set but struggled to overcome UAH's increasingly consistent play. The Lady Bucs improved their hitting percentage slightly to 0.077, with Schumacher and Allen contributing offensively, yet UAH's defense remained strong. The Lady Bucs' service game had bright spots, including aces from Zavala, but errors crept in, hindering their comeback efforts. UAH, bolstered by a late-game offensive surge and an impressive .379 hitting percentage, closed out the set 25-14 to secure the match.
