Men's Soccer advances to semifinals with overtime victory over Delta State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University men's soccer delivered an intense 2-1 overtime victory against Delta State on Friday night at Signaigo Field. The Buccaneers advanced to the semifinals of the GSC Championship Tournament with the result. They will take on the winner of Auburn-Montgomery and Trevecca Nazarene's quarterfinal match on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Huntsville.

First Half: Early Momentum for CBU

The match started with an aggressive pace from both teams, but it was CBU that struck first. In the 6th minute, midfielder Juan Minguez Malonda broke the deadlock, converting a well-timed assist from George Chandler to put CBU up 1-0. This early goal showcased CBU's sharp offensive coordination with Chandler's vision and passing set up the scoring chance. CBU's offensive control was reflected in their shot count, as they tallied five shots in the first half, applying constant pressure on Delta State's defensive line.

Defensively, CBU demonstrated physical play, with seven fouls in the first half as they disrupted Delta State's attacks. Despite this, Delta State managed three shots on goal, one of which forced CBU's goalkeeper Vicent Sanchis Olmedo into action with a save to maintain the lead. The physical tone was underscored by a series of fouls from both sides that added to the tension on the field.

Second Half: Delta State Equalizes

The second half saw Delta State adjusting their tactics, pushing more men forward in an effort to equalize. In the 58th minute, their persistence paid off when James Lynch netted the equalizer, making the score 1-1. This goal shifted the momentum, and Delta State began to find more rhythm offensively. CBU responded by tightening their defense, which led to multiple fouls.

CBU continued to press forward, outshooting Delta State 10-3 in the second half. However, they struggled to find the back of the net as Delta State's goalkeeper, Mason Baglio, made crucial saves to deny scoring chances from Russell Brown and Alexander Blanche. Despite several corner kicks and shot attempts, the CBU attack could not break through Delta State's defense before the end of regulation, leaving the game tied.

Extra Time: Brown Seals the Win

Entering extra time, both teams appeared fatigued but determined to secure the win. Delta State managed four additional shots, yet CBU's defense, anchored by Sanchis Olmedo's goalkeeping, held firm. CBU's attacking persistence paid off in the second period of extra time, when Russell Brown scored a dramatic game-winning goal in the 106th minute. Assisted by an alert midfield that exploited Delta State's exhausted defense, Brown's finish marked his eighth goal of the season and secured the win for CBU.

Sanchis Olmedo's strong performance, highlighted by six saves throughout the match, was instrumental in maintaining CBU's lead and stabilizing their defense under pressure. CBU ultimately outshot Delta State 20-9, illustrating their dominance in creating opportunities, even if only two translated into goals. Their disciplined, albeit physical, approach was evident as they tallied 19 fouls.

Conclusion

This win for CBU exemplified a blend of tactical discipline and individual brilliance. The midfield's creativity, Chandler's pivotal assist, and Brown's timely finishing underscored CBU's cohesive team play. With this victory, the Bucs improved their record to 11-3-3 and extended their win streak to six matches.
