Women's Basketball drops double overtime nail-biter to Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Christian Brothers University women's basketball (0-9, 0-4 GSC) faced Montevallo (4-5, 2-2 GSC) in a dramatic double-overtime clash at the Central State Bank Arena on Thursday night. Despite leading for most of the game, the Lady Bucs fell short by a final score of 82-79. This closely contested matchup showcased incredible perseverance and standout performances on both sides.

First Half Overview:

The Lady Bucs started strong, ending the first quarter tied 15-15 and building momentum in the second. Led by Jada Hood, who sank multiple three-pointers, CBU outscored Montevallo 20-13 in the second quarter. Hood displayed her shooting prowess, netting 12 points by halftime, while Emily Sawyer anchored the interior defense with six rebounds.

CBU led 35-28 at halftime, largely due to efficient shooting (53.8 percent in the second quarter) and effective defensive rebounding, limiting Montevallo's second-chance opportunities.

Second Half Drama:

The Lady Bucs extended their lead to 14 points early in the third quarter, their largest advantage of the game. Valencia McFall and Lamonnie Ownes added critical baskets, but Montevallo fought back with a balanced attack led by Jordan Gillies and Lia Edwards. Montevallo closed the third quarter tied 15-15, trimming the Lady Bucs' lead to 50-43.

The fourth quarter saw the Falcons intensify their defense, forcing turnovers that converted into fast-break points. Despite resilient scoring from Hood and Sawyer, CBU's shooting faltered, dropping to 26.7 percent for the quarter. Montevallo outscored CBU 21-14, tying the game at the end of regulation.

Overtime Battle:

In overtime, both teams exchanged blows. Hood continued to lead with her fearless three-point shooting, while Sawyer controlled the paint, adding clutch offensive rebounds. However, Montevallo's free-throw accuracy (90.9 percent for the game) proved pivotal in the second overtime. Despite CBU's valiant efforts, including standout performances from Hood (23 points, 9 rebounds) and Sawyer (12 points, 9 rebounds), Montevallo edged ahead for the 82-79 victory.

Key Takeaways:

  • Player Highlights:
    • Jada Hood: Dominated offensively with 23 points, including seven three-pointers, and added nine rebounds. All three tallies were season-highs for the graduate guard.
    • Emily Sawyer: Balanced effort with 12 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks, controlling both ends of the floor. Her totals for points and rebounds were both highs for the season.
    • Valencia McFall: Consistent scoring with 11 points and a season-best eight rebounds.
  • Team Strengths: Strong rebounding (47 total) and three-point shooting (40.9 percent).
  • Areas to Improve: Turnovers plagued the Lady Bucs, committing 21 compared to Montevallo's 19. Additionally, fourth-quarter shooting slumps hindered their ability to close the game.
