CBU undone by strong second-half showing from AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Christian Brothers University women's basketball (0-10, 0-5 GSC) faced a tough battle on Saturday afternoon, falling to Auburn University at Montgomery (4-7, 2-4 GSC) with a final score of 78-65. The Lady Bucs went into halftime with a slim lead before a strong second-half showing by AUM turned the tide.

First Half Highlights:

CBU started the game with a strong first quarter, keeping pace with AUM despite turnovers. Valencia McFall led the charge early with efficient inside scoring, and the Lady Bucs found themselves trailing by just three points, 17-14, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, CBU gained momentum, outscoring AUM 18-13, to secure a 32-30 lead at halftime. The team's ball movement was a highlight, with Jada Hood and Lamonnie Ownes combining for multiple assists to set up quality looks. McFall continued her dominance in the paint, scoring efficiently and contributing on the boards.

Second Half Struggles:

The third quarter saw the momentum swing heavily in favor of AUM, who went on an 11-0 scoring run midway through the quarter. Led by the sharpshooting of Allasha Dudley and a team-wide effort to capitalize on turnovers, AUM outscored CBU 27-15 in the period. McFall was again the anchor for CBU, but the team struggled to maintain offensive rhythm, and their defense could not contain AUM's hot shooting.

Fourth Quarter Recap:

CBU attempted a rally in the final quarter, with Jada Hood hitting key three-pointers and McFall continuing her stellar performance. However, the Warhawks' depth and bench production proved to be too much, as they maintained a comfortable lead throughout the final minutes. The Lady Bucs struggled to convert second-chance opportunities and close the gap despite playing with determination until the final buzzer.

Key Players:

  • Valencia McFall: The standout performer for CBU, McFall played 36:48 minutes and scored a team-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting, with eight rebounds and strong play on both ends of the floor.
  • Jada Hood: Hood contributed 13 points, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and led the team in assists with five.
  • SeQuoia Carroll: Provided valuable minutes off the bench, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 20:48 of action.

Team Performance:

CBU shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 41.7 percent from three-point range, and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line, demonstrating their offensive efficiency. However, turnovers (17 total) and a lack of bench production (12 points compared to AUM's 40) proved costly.

Looking Ahead:

Despite a valiant effort, CBU fell short against a well-rounded AUM team. Valencia McFall's outstanding individual performance and the team's efficient shooting were bright spots in an otherwise challenging outing. The Lady Bucs will look to regroup and refocus during the break and come back renewed for the remainder of the conference slate.
