Lady Bucs Bounce Back to Earn Split with West Georgia

MEMPHIS - The Christian Brothers University softball team bounced back to earn a doubleheader split with West Georgia, on Saturday afternoon, at Bland Field. UWG used a big inning to win the opener 8-1, but the Lady Bucs fought back to earn a 4-3 win to avoid the sweep. 

The contests marked the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. 

GAME ONE: UWG 8 (6-5, 1-0 GSC) CBU 1 (3-4, 0-1 GSC) 

GAME CHANGER:
With the game tied at one, the visitors scored seven runs in the sixth to take control of the game.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Both teams finished with six hits. 
  • Four UWG hits came in the sixth inning.  
  • Six CBU players recorded a hit. 
  • Starting pitcher Emily Schooler allowed seven runs on four hits, with seven strikeouts, in 5.2 innings. 
KEY PLAYS:
After a wild pitch, the Wolves took a `1-0 lead on a sac-fly. 
The Lady Bucs answered in the fourth after Josie Bond singled to score Summer Alexander
CBU had a pair of runners in scoring position, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat. 
In the sixth, the Wolves sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on four hits. Four of the seven runs came with two outs. 
 
GAME TWO: CBU 4 (4-4, 1-1 GSC) UWG 3 (6-6, 1-1 GSC) 

GAME CHANGER:
With CBU down to its final four outs, Kate Candies two-RBI single gave the Lady Bucs a 4-3 lead.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • UWG finished with a 9-4 edge in hits. 
  • The Lady Bucs took advantage of nine walks. 
  • Kylie Burks finished with two of the four CBU hits. 
  • A double from Kiera Coulon was the lone extra-base hit for CBU. 
  • Candies and Ashlynn Smith had the CBU RBIs. 
  • Starting pitcher Gabby Dickerson allowed just two earned runs in the complete-game win. 
KEY PLAYS:
A bases loaded walk from Smith gave CBU a 1-0 lead after four. 
With the score tied at one, an RBI single from Burks gave the Lady Bucs a 2-1 lead after five innings. 
The Wolves hit back-to-back home runs to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth. 
CBU answered, using two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases for Candies, who answered with a two-RBI single. 
After a one out single, Dickerson forced a line drive double play to end the game. 

UP NEXT:
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, Feb. 18 when they wrap up the series with West Georgia. First pitch is set for 11 AM.
