Schooler's Big Day Helps Lady Bucs Split at UAH Charger Chillout

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. - Emily Schooler had 14 strikeouts to help the Christian Brothers University softball team earn a 5-1 win over Miles, on Thursday afternoon, at the UAH Charger Chillout. The Lady Bucs narrowly missed a sweep, as they dropped a hard-fought nightcap, 8-7 (9), to Young Harris. 

GAME ONE: CBU 5 (3-0) MC 1 (0-1) 

GAME CHANGER:
CBU starting pitcher Emily Schooler struck out 14 Miles batters, allowing just one unearned run, on three hits. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Bucs finished with an 5-3 advantage in hits. 
  • Three of the five CBU hits were for extra bases. 
  • Josie Bond had an inside the park home run. 
  • Katie Candies drove three runs. 
KEY PLAYS:
After a scoreless first inning, the inside the park home run by Bond scored Riley Simpson to give CBU a 2-0 lead. 
Candies gave CBU a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice-bunt. 
In the fifth, CBU extended its lead when Candies drove in a pair with a single to right field. 
Miles scored its lone run of the game in the sixth, when it took advantage of an error and scored on a sacrifice-bunt. 
 
NOTABLES:
  • The 14 strikeouts for Schooler are tied for fourth-most in a game in program history.
  • It also marks the most punch outs in a game, by a CBU pitcher, since Kaylea Brewer had 13 against Bethel in 2010. 
  • The home run for Bond was the first of her career. 
GAME TWO: YHC 8 (6-1) CBU 7 (3-1) (9)

GAME CHANGER:
In the top of the ninth, with runners on first and second with just one out, Young Harris turned an inning-ending double play. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Bucs were outhit 16-10.
  • CBU had three extra-base hits. 
  • Summer Alexander was 2-for-3 with an inside the park home run and two RBIs. 
  • Kylie Burks finished 2-for-3 with a double. 
  • Relief pitcher Emily Schooler allowed two unearned runs on six hits, with five strikeouts, in 3.1 innings of work. 
KEY PLAYS:
After CBU scored in the first, the Mountain Lions scored a pair to take a 2-1 lead. 
CBU added a pair in the second to take a 4-2 lead. 
Young Harris added two in the third and two in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. 
With CBU down to its final out, and a runner on first, Alexander smacked a ball down the right field line and used her speed to give her a game-tying inside the park home run. 
With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, CBU used a bunt single from Kiera Coulon to take a 7-6 lead. 
Young Harris tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double. 
The Mountain Lions turned an inning-ending double play to retire CBU in the eighth. 
After a bunt single, Avery Fielden recorded a walk-off single to give Young Harris the win.
