MEMPHIS- The Christian Brothers University softball team earned a doubleheader split with Tennessee Southern on Tuesday afternoon, at Bland Field. The Lady Bucs hit away to a 7-0 win in the opener, but UT Southern used a big extra inning to win the second game 6-4.
GAME ONE: CBU 7 (14-14) UT-Southern 0 (12-11)
GAME CHANGER: The Lady Bucs hit three home runs, RJ Simpson with 2 of the 3 homers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs led with a 13-3 advantage in hits.
- RJ Simpson recorded two home runs and two RBIs.
- Eight CBU players recorded at least one hit.
- CBU pitcher Emily Schooler pitched a full game, recorded a shutout and only allowed three hits, with fourteen strikeouts.
KEY PLAYS:
The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two home runs, one from RJ Simpson and one from Haylee Alberson, in the bottom of the third inning.
CBU then added another run in the fourth inning from a Summer Alexander RBI double making it 3-0.
A Kate Candies RBI single adds another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-0.
A big hitting sixth inning added 3 more runs for the Lady Bucs to make it 7-0, led by another RJ Simpson home run.
GAME TWO: CBU 4 (14-15) UT-Southern 6 (13-11)
GAME CHANGER:
UT Southern scored four runs in an extra inning which proved to be enough to secure the win over the Lady Bucs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Mackenzie Bakel finished 2-4, scoring 2 of the Lady Bucs 4 runs.
- Both teams finished with 7 hits each.
- Six Lady Bucs recorded hits in the game.
- The CBU pitching staff recorded 4 strikeouts and left 9 runners stranded.
KEY PLAYS:
UT Southern took the lead 2-0 early on, scoring one run in the second inning and one run in the fourth inning.
The Lady Bucs rallied back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning at 2-2 from a Kylie Burks 2 RBI double, forcing extra innings.
The Firehawks scored 4 runs in the top of the eighth inning taking the lead at 6-2.
The Lady Bucs scored 2 runs to cut the lead to 6-4, however that would end the scoring for CBU.

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on Lee University for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM CT.
