CBU picks up fourth win this season at Kentucky Wesleyan Vortex Invitational

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Christian Brothers University volleyball (4-4) picked up its fourth win of the season against tournament host Kentucky Wesleyan with a third-consecutive sweep on Friday. The Buccaneers dropped their next three matches to stiff competition at the Kentucky Wesleyan Vortex Invitational. 

Match 1: Christian Brothers 3, Kentucky Wesleyan 0
  • CBU defeated the Panthers (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) with ease to start the two-day tournament on the right foot.
  • The Bucs held KWC to a -.069 hitting percentage in a dominant performance.
  • Junior middle hitter Calah Jackson earned a match-high 14 points for Christian Brothers with 12 kills and two service aces.
  • Senior setter Sarah Allyn Thornell assisted on 29 kills in the three-set match.
  • Senior right side hitter Tia Rizvi frustrated Kentucky Wesleyan's hitters with her match-leading 17 digs. Rizvi tied her career-high for digs set in Aug. of 2022 versus King.
Match 2: Indianapolis 3, Christian Brothers 0
  • The Bucs were defeated by UINDY (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) in their second match on Friday.
  • CBU was particularly competitive in the first set. Down 23-17, Christian Brothers stole the next five-straight points to come back within a point of the Greyhounds. The following two points went Indianapolis's way to quell the comeback.
  • Rizvi led all players in the match with a season-high 11 kills.
Match 3: Lake Superior State 3, Christian Brothers 0
  • CBU was defeated by the Lakers (25-18, 25-19, 28-26) in its first match on Saturday.
  • The Bucs were competitive in every set and nearly won the thrilling third set.
  • Christian Brothers rushed out to an 11-2 advantage in the third set before LSSU began chipping away at the massive early lead. The set ended up tied at 25-apiece after a kill from Jackson. Points were traded before Lake Superior State picked up two straight to win it.
Match 4: Minnesota St.-Mankato 3, Christian Brothers 0
  • Christian Brothers was defeated by the Mavericks (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) in the nightcap on Saturday.
  • The Bucs put up a serious fight in both the second and third sets, falling just four points short in each.
  • Senior defensive specialist Aileen Zavala registered a season-best 15 digs in the hard-fought match. She recorded an impressive 47 digs over the course of the tournament.

CBU will head to Arkansas-Monticello for a dual match on Sept. 20th-21st.
