Volleyball edged by Lee in last two sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University volleyball team (4-7, 0-1 GSC) was defeated by Lee (7-6, 1-0 GSC) in three sets on Tuesday night at the Canale Arena. The Lady Buccaneers bounced back after dropping the first set by a 25-14 margin. They were edged by the Flames in the second and third sets (26-24, 25-23) after putting up a heck of a fight.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Junior Calah Jackson led all players with 13 kills and nearly notched another double-double with nine digs.
  • Senior Sarah Allyn Thornell posted a match-high 26 assists and recorded two service aces.
  • Senior Tia Rizvi registered a match-leading 15 digs.
  • Junior Abby Wheaton's six total blocks was her best mark of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lee ran away with the first set, 25-14. The separation came late when the Flames scored six unanswered points to go up 23-10. The Bucs did well to shake off the result of the opening set and proceeded to go toe-to-toe with Lee in the next two sets.
  • The second set was close until Lee gained a 24-19 advantage towards the end. Up against set-point, CBU seized all of the next five points in incredible fashion to tie the score at 24-apiece. Wheaton and Rizvi combined for two blocks while Thornell picked up two points for Christian Brothers with a kill and an ace. The Flames grabbed the following two points to thwart the comeback.
  • The Bucs gained the early momentum in the third set with a 7-0 run that put them up by seven points, 13-6. Jackson racked up three kills during the stretch.
  • The momentum of the third set shifted when Lee went on a 10-1 run to go up by two, 20-18. CBU regained the lead twice afterwards, but the Flames were able to finish strong and prevent a fourth set from being played.
