CBU takes a set from GSC preseason favorites West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Christian Brothers University volleyball (4-8, 0-2 GSC) was defeated by Gulf South Conference preseason favorites West Florida (8-5, 3-0 GSC) in four sets on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House. The Lady Buccaneers put up 20 points in the second set before they claimed the third set, 25-22.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Freshman Ella Schumacher posted a match-high 15.5 points with 12 kills, three service aces and one block assist.
  • Senior Sarah Allyn Thornell set up a team-leading 20 assists while recording nine digs.
  • Sophomore Sofia Rathheim-Hilton registered 10 digs for the second-straight match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Argonauts proved they were deserving of their selection as preseason favorites to win the GSC with a 25-7 victory in the opening set.
  • CBU did not roll over after the discouraging result of the first set. The Bucs kept the second set close throughout and were edged in the end, 25-20. They held the lead once, 3-2, after a pair of service aces from Schumacher and tied the score once, 9-9, after scoring four unanswered points.
  • The third set was a true battle of wills in which Christian Brothers' fortitude won out, 25-22. CBU gained the lead in the early moments before UWF went ahead, 13-11, with a 6-1 run. The Bucs then responded with a set-defining 7-1 run that put them up by four points, 18-14. Schumacher and Tia Rizvi were the primary architects of the run that gave Charistian Brothers the lead for good. West Florida closed the gap to two points, 22-20, before CBU was able to finish what it started with a kill by Schumacher.
  • The first half of the fourth set was close. The Bucs trailed 14-10 before the Argos were able to gain control and ultimately win the final set by a 25-11 margin.

NEXT UP

Christian Brothers will host GSC newcomers Trevecca Nazarene at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 next. The Bucs were originally slated to play Valdosta State on Sunday, Sept. 29, but that game was postponed due to the impact of Hurricane Helene. A make-up date has not been set yet.
