Women's Soccer falls to Tampa despite a valiant effort

TAMPA, Fla. – Christian Brothers University women's soccer (0-1) visited Tampa (1-0) on Thursday night and fell to the Spartans by a final score of 3-0. The Buccaneers strung together a series of good chances throughout the non-conference contest, but were unable to beat a solid netminder that saved four potential goals.

Sophomore midfielder Ana Dutra was responsible for Christian Brothers' best chance for a goal in the 16th minute of the first half. She lined up for a free kick from around 20 yards out. She ran up and belted a shot at the top right corner of goal that required a leaping tip over the crossbar by the opposing keeper.

Junior defender Lia Haggstrom created another good chance for CBU to score in the 30th minute from a free kick.  From 30 yards out, she arced a shot that nearly creeped under the crossbar if not for a fingertip push over it.

Tampa's Sydni Dennis broke the deadlock in the 34th minute after a lengthy lightning delay. The goal was the result of a series of unfortunate deflections off a corner kick. The last deflection landed in the back of the net, 1-0.

The Bucs ended the first half with only the one unlucky goal scored against them. The shot count was nearly even after the first 45 minutes with CBU recording four shots in comparison to Tampa's five shots.

Freshman forward Alexa Franklin nearly equalized in the 58th minute. From outside the 18-yard box, she ripped a shot at the top right corner of the net that required another fingertip save by Tampa's goalie.

In the 65th minute, the Spartans scored their second goal with a shot from distance that would have beat any goalkeeper. Tampa's Brooke Kittner curled a shot into the right-side netting from 25-yards out with a CBU defender on top of her, 2-0.

The third Spartan goal came in the waning moments of the match. In the 81st minute, Tampa's Mimi Cronquist scored with another miraculous shot from distance. CBU keeper Gemma Crowe backtracked to try to make the save, but she was beaten by the out-of-reach ball, 3-0.

The final shot of the match was taken by Dutra in the 84th minute. Her shot from a free kick missed the mark despite a good effort.

The Bucs will remain in Florida for another non-conference clash at Eckerd College on Saturday, Sept. 7th. The kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
