Bucs split on first day of Lane College Dragon Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University volleyball team split a pair of matches played on Friday at the Lane College Dragon Classic. The Buccaneers were narrowly defeated in three sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) by Fayetteville State before they triumphed in five sets (25-21, 15-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-8) against hosts Lane College.

Key Players
  • Freshman Ella Schumacher recorded a season-high 23 kills in the match against Lane.
  • Senior Sarah Allyn Thornell registered a career-high 47 points in the five-set thriller versus Lane.
  • Junior Calah Jackson also set a new career-high with 18 kills against Lane.

Match 1: Fayetteville State 3, Christian Brothers 0

Set 1: FSU 25, CBU 23
  • The Bucs gained a 3-1 lead early on after a service ace from Ella Schumacher.
  • The Broncos shifted the momentum by taking the next four points to grab a 5-3 advantage.
  • CBU came within one point of tying FSU on six occasions after losing the lead, but was unable to completely close the gap.

Set 2: FSU 25, CBU 20
  • Again, Christian Brothers gained the early advantage with a 5-3 lead. A Sarah Allyn Thornell block followed by back-to-back kills from Alma Solis and Addison Waggoner made up the 3-0 run that gave CBU the two-point edge.
  • A 10-1 run by Fayetteville State ensued that forced the Bucs to play catch up for the remainder of the set.
  • Christian Brothers made a push towards the end with a 5-1 run, including back-to-back kills by Waggoner, that brought the Bucs back to within two points, 22-20.
  • The Broncos picked up the next three points to claim the second set.

Set 3: FSU 25, CBU 21
  • The Bucs could have thrown in the towel after going down 12-2 in the third set, but responded brilliantly by claiming nine-straight points to come back within one point, 12-11. Schumacher was responsible for three of the nine points by way of a trio of kills.
  • The following five points all went Fayetteville State's way and the momentum never returned to CBU.

Match 2: Christian Brothers 3, Lane College 2

Set 1: Christian Brothers 25, Lane College 21
  • The Bucs rushed out to an 8-3 lead in the first set and never looked back. Calah Jackson sparked the fire by opening up the match with a pair of consecutive kills.
  • The Dragons came back within one point, 20-19, before CBU surged back ahead with three unanswered points.
  • Sarah Allyn Thornell set up Tia Rizvi for the kill that clinched the set for Christian Brothers.

Set 2: Lane College 25, Christian Brothers 15
  • An 8-2 run by Lane midway through the second set created an insurmountable advantage, 22-10, for the Dragons.
  • CBU picked up four of the next six points to delay the inevitable. Schumacher recorded three kills during the stretch to help her team to a respectable 15 points.

Set 3: Lane College 25, Christian Brothers 21
  • The Bucs actually held the lead for most of the third set. However, Lane clung to CBU's heels until the lead was eventually erased.
  • The Dragons pulled ahead late with an 8-1 run that gave them a 24-19 advantage. Lane went up 2-1 in the match after earning the set-clinching point shortly after its run.

Set 4: Christian Brothers 25, Lane College 18
  • With their backs against the wall, the Bucs responded purposely by seizing an 11-3 advantage to start the fourth set.
  • The Bucs did not allow Lane to come within more than five points of them for the remainder of the set.
  • Jackson recorded the 24th point with a kill before an attack error by the Broncos sent the match to a decisive fifth set.

Set 5: Christian Brothers 15, Lane College 8
  • The Broncos put the pressure on Christian Brothers early in the fifth set by going up 5-2 to start it.
  • CBU rose to the occasion by responding with a relentless 12-2 run. Jackson registered four kills during the run to lead her team towards its first victory of the season.
  • Thornell put the nail in the coffin with the game-winning kill.
