Volleyball sweeps both opponents on day two of the Lane College Dragon Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University volleyball (3-1) swept both Harris-Stowe State and LeMoyne-Owen on the second day of the Lane College Dragon Classic. The Bucs blanked Harris-Stowe State in the third set and did not allow LeMoyne-Owen to reach 15 points in any of the three sets.

Match 1: Christian Brothers 3, Harris-Stowe State 0

Set 1: CBU 25, HSSU 19
  • The first set of the match was the only one that was remotely close.
  • Christian Brothers comfortably maintained the lead for the majority of the set until the Hornets came close to equalizing late with four unanswered points, 18-17.
  • WIth HSSU within one point, CBU seized all of the next five points, 23-17. Sarah Allyn Thornell registered two service aces during the surge.
  • Ella Schumacher clinched the first set with a kill from an assist by Tia Rizvi.

Set 2:  CBU 25, HSSU 10
  • The Bucs went up 14-4 in the second set and never looked back.
  • CBU finished the set with seven unanswered points to win it convincingly.
  • Rizvi recorded five-straight service aces to close out set two.*

Set 3: CBU 25, HSSU 0
  • The Bucs did not allow a single point to be scored against them in the third set.*

Match 2: Christian Brothers 3, LeMoyne-Owen 0

Set 1: CBU 25, LOC 11
  • Christian Brothers rushed out to a 12-4 lead in the first set. The Bucs earned half of those 12 points from kills and the other half were the result of errors made by the Magicians.
  • Play somewhat evened out after the early surge, but CBU still commanded the lead until the end.
  • Alma Solis brought the set to a conclusion with a kill from an assist by Thornell.

Set 2: CBU 25, LOC 14
  • Christian Brothers recorded three consecutive points on six different occasions in the second set to stay in front.
  • An attack error by LeMoyne-Owen handed the set to CBU.

Set 3: CBU 25, LOC 11
  • The Bucs gained the upper hand in the third set with a 9-1 run late. They threw down five kills and one service ace during the dominant stretch to go up by 14 points, 22-8.
  • Christian Brothers ended the match with three unanswered points which came from back-to-back kills and a service ace by Aldon Pilz for the win.

The Bucs will head to a tournament hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, Sept. 13th.
