CBU stumbles against Valdosta State's sharpshooting

VALDOSTA, Ga. – In their Gulf South Conference matchup against Valdosta State (10-5, 5-4 GSC) at The Complex on Saturday afternoon, the Christian Brothers University women's basketball team (0-14, 0-9 GSC) faced a challenging game that ended in a 97-62 defeat.

First Half Highlights

CBU started strong, briefly leading 13-10 early in the first quarter thanks to a seven-point scoring run fueled by sharp shooting from Jada Hood and Lamonnie Ownes. Hood contributed a team-high 18 points, including 4-for-10 shooting from three-point range, but CBU's momentum faded as Valdosta State's fast-paced offense, led by India Jordan and Aryana Hicks, capitalized on turnovers and fast-break opportunities.

Valdosta State pulled away with a dominant first quarter, outscoring CBU 29-15, and maintained their lead throughout the second quarter. Despite a few key plays from SeQuoia Carroll, who added nine points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, CBU struggled to find consistency in their shooting, finishing the first half trailing 48-28.

Second Half Breakdown

Valdosta State's offensive efficiency soared in the third quarter, highlighted by their 64.3 percent shooting from the field, including 66.7 percent from three-point range. CBU, on the other hand, managed only 25 percent shooting in the quarter, with scoring contributions coming sporadically from a handful of Lady Bucs. Valdosta State outscored CBU 25-10 in the quarter, effectively sealing the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bucs showed resilience, putting up 24 points, their highest-scoring quarter of the game. Hood and Jasmine Jones combined for 13 points while Carroll added five points and three crucial rebounds. However, Valdosta State's deep bench, which scored 36 points in the contest, proved too much to overcome.

Key Stats

  • Jada Hood: 18 points, 3 rebounds, 4-for-10 from three.
  • SeQuoia Carroll: 9 points, 7 rebounds.
  • Lammonie Owens: 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4-for-10 from field.
  • Turnovers: CBU committed 13 turnovers, leading to 22 Valdosta State points.

Looking Ahead

Christian Brothers will host Trevecca Nazarene (4-10, 1-7 GSC) on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m. next. The matchup will present a good opportunity for the Lady Bucs to secure their first win of the season.
