Women's Basketball's fourth quarter surge falls short against Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Christian Brothers University women's basketball team (0-17, 0-12 GSC) was defeated by Delta State University (11-7, 7-5 GSC) by a final score of 67-53 in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Thursday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Despite a spirited effort, CBU struggled to gain momentum, falling behind early and failing to recover against a well-rounded DSU team.

Game Flow

  1. First Quarter:
    • The game started competitively, with both teams trading early baskets. CBU briefly held a three-point lead (5-2) after Jada Hood knocked down a shot from behind the arc, but quickly lost ground as DSU went on an 8-0 run to regain control.
    • CBU trailed 18-13 at the end of the quarter.
  2. Second Quarter:
    • DSU tightened their defense and maintained control of the game. CBU struggled with their shooting, converting just 4-of-14 field goals (28.6 percent).
    • DSU began to pull away, draining three triples in the quarter. By halftime, CBU trailed 34-24.
  3. Third Quarter:
    • This quarter proved pivotal, as DSU's efficient shooting (60 percent) allowed them to extend their lead significantly. DSU outscored CBU 20-13 during this stretch.
    • DSU led by 17 points, 54-37, going into the final 10 minutes.
  4. Fourth Quarter:
    • Despite being down by as many as 22 points in the third quarter, CBU displayed resilience in the final period. They outscored DSU 16-13 but were unable to close the gap significantly.
    • Hood and Jasmine Jones led the charge with a combined nine points, but the deficit proved insurmountable.

Key Players

  • Jada Hood led CBU with 15 points, showcasing her ability to score from both the perimeter (three three-pointers) and free-throw line (6-of-8).
